ARCHBISHOP DILUOFF'S CLAIM FOR A
LAKH.
A suit is now being heard in the Calcutta High Court, before Mr. Justice Bodilly. In which the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bom. bay is claiming payment of a sum of over a lakh of rupees lying in the hands of the "fficial Arustee of Bengal and belonging to the Barotin estate, the Archbishop having been appointed by the Bombay High Court trustee to the Baretto Charity School at Cavel, Bombay. The most astonishing statement made by the
correspondent of the Times is that "The Kore. ao police have been suspended and a Japanese' gendarmerie has undertaken since January the maintenance of order in Senal and the sur rounding country." To nur certain knowledge there has ever heen a day that the Korean police were suspended. They are in evidence everywhere in Seoul and its virinty and Dr. Morrison could not have walked two hundred yards in any thoroughfare in this city without passing the little sentry boxes where they are stationed.
We do not think the extremely one-sided view presented by Dr. Morrison is accurate nor will it do Japan any real good. The latter have acquired certain rights in Korea which all are bound to respect. Railroad building is a thing of national, and international importance and the impulse given to the development of the country's sources and industries is wholly praiseworthy; but that, connected with this work, there should be no mistakes--no practice that are questionable is hardly to be expected, As well-wishers of lanin as well as of Korea we indicate the bad points as well as the good, feeling that this is best for every one con cerned,

A GREAT DISASTER RECALLED.
There was recently unveiled in the parish church of Beckingham. Notts. Fogland, a handsome memorial to the late Mrs. Marian Parkinson, one of the last survivors of the Bir.
•kenhead troopship disaster. Mrs. Parkinson was a daughter of Drum-major John l'obert Darkin, of the Queen's (Royal West Burrey) Regiment, and as a child was going out with her mother to join the drum-major, then enga ged with his regiment in the Kaffir War. When the vessel struck on Daryer Paint, South Afri ca, Mrs. Darkin and her young daughter were among the women and children who, thanks to the heroism and discipline displayed by the troops, were enabled in escape in the ship'e boats, while 445 soldiers and seamen, including most of the officers on board, perithed, being either drowned outright, dashed to death on the rocks, or devuured by the sharks which in- fested the sen Marian Parkin remained with the regiment until her father's discharge in 1860 Three years later ber mother died at Kaares. borough. Her father died at Leeds in 1883. Her brothers, all born at Fort Hare, Cape of Good Hope, entered the Coldstream Guarde, in which corps they represented the fourth ge neration of the family Juhn Pehert. Darkin' belonging to that regiment before joining the Queen's, and his father and grand-father hay. Ing also served in the Coldstreams. Marian Darkin married and settled at Beckingham. Not long before her death in November last Mrs. Parkinson, who retained a vivid recollec. tion of the shipwreck, wrote as follows of her experience on that terrible night in. February, 18;2:
"I was three years and eight months old st the time of the wreck, and I can remember quite well my mother taking me jo her arms on deck in my pight clothes, and giving me to the cabin-boy to hold. In after years I learnt she went below to fetch a cloak she left behind, and they had lowered me into the boat when she got back on deck. She could not find me, and all the boats had pushed off clear of the ship. Two of the officers swung mother from the side of the vessel as it was sinking, and she just caught the side of the boat and fell among the accu. pants as the boat was on, the point of being drawn ander by the sinking vessel. We word in the boat many hours, 'natil a small vessel picked us up."
The memorial to Marian Parkinson-s large mural brass on cake base, with a representation of the sinking troopship above the lnscripilen records that the Wirkenband was lost "under circumstances which evoked the admiration of all countries," it was erected by the officers and all ranks of the 1st Battalion the Queen's, which regiment had a detachment on board, of whom Ensign Reylan, Bandmaster Zwyker, and thirty-three men of fifty rank and file were drowned.
