Odessa, which within the last twenty-four hours han so wuddenly and sensationally be- come the centre of the world's interest, is the fourth town in the Gzar's "dominions Even before the Christian era there was, on the alte where Odessa now standa, a small Greek Battle ment known as Cdessos. This was destroyed by wandering Asiatics about the fourth century, and for a thousand years the place passes out of history. During the fifteenth century, tha Turks discovered: It, and towards the end of that contury it was under the name of Had]lį Bor, a considerable trading Centro, Zlá 1280 it was captured by the Russians, after., a stuby born resistance, and by the peace of Xasay, jo | 1791 it was formally ceded to them. In 1794 it was renamed after the anciant seulemant, but Catherine, Il. declared that, as ghe, was d woman, it should be called Odessa, tet Odesson. 1he Russians determined to make of it a great port and trading centre, and, the work, was promptly taken in band by De-Ribas, whose name still rasvains in that of the princij pal street, the Deribá sovnkaya.
