QUEENSLAND, AND HER FOREIGN TRADE.

INTERVIEW WITH THE STATE'S COMMERCIAL AGENT,

Since the various States of Australia were formed into a Uommonwealth some four years ago, Australia bas occupied a more prominent position among the countries of the world and Australians have attracted world-wide criticism | by their ventures in law-making under com- bloed self-government. Commercially, also, there has been a great effort at development A present fully accredited agents of New South Wales and Queensland are stationed in the Far Fast, in India and other countries watching the markets and doing what they cap to advance the trade of their respective States. Among these commissioners for trade is Mr. Frederic Toner, representing Queensland in the Far East, who since bis appointment to this post over twelve months ago has spent what appears to have been a very profitable time in Far astern ports in the interests of

his country. Mr. Jones recently arrived on a visit to Japan, and on Tuesday he was seen by a Chronicle representative, who desired 'sa know how and in what way the Commissioner worked in the interests of Queensland.

Mr. Jones, who is an alert man of forty, with An amount of energy which in this weather is admirable to contemplate, was ready to explain all about himself and his business. Asked as

to the reasons for his appointment, he said

that the Queensland Government recognised that the great economic question with which they had to deal was not production but dis tribution, more especially with such a State as Queensland, where in frequently occurred that a large harvest and splendid reasons reduced the price of farmers' commodities to a very low point as the market became overstocked. "To remedy this,"continued the Commissioner, "my Government decided upon appointing agents for abroad. I was appointed Commissioner for the Far East in April 1904. My work cons! sists in finding out the exact peculiarities of the various markets at ports that I visit, so that I am able to report current prices, the nature and methods of packing, and general 'mercan- file information which enables our shippers to prepare and export the exact article required,"

With regard to the meat contract, it is interesting to know that the Queensland Com missioner was instrumental in securing at Hongkong the first order ever given to Australia for the supply of four to the British forces in the Far East Australian flour is quoted at pr ces slightly above the American product, but Mr. Jones says the opinion is unanimous that the superior quality of the Australian article outweighs the difference. Conversation on the general conditions of Queensland turned upon the energetic heads of departments in the Govemment and particular-- ly upon the Minister for Agriculture, late mem. | ber of a firm of produce exporters, who retired from a business bringing in some thousand of pounds a year to enter politics. The Commis- ioner had something to say about what this Minister has accomplished.

"Political enemies and friends agree that to the Hon. Digby Denham, who brought all the energy of a highly-skilled successful merchan! In the prime of life into the Department of Agriculture, is entirely due the recent surprising agricultural development of Queensland. A SILLY SAYING.

"It is a common but silly opinion prevailing among a certain class of people that the worse remedy tastes, smells or hurts, the more efficacious it la. So says a well-known Eng- lish physician, He further adde: "For example, let us consider cid liver oil, As it is extracted from the fish this oil is so offensive to the taste and famell that almost everybody abhors it, and many cannot use it at all, no matter how badly they need it. Yet cod liver oll is one of the most valuable drags in the world, and it le the greatest pity that we have not thus far been able to free it from those peculiarities which so seriously interfere with its usefulness." This was written years ago; the work of civilising and redeeming it how ever has since been triumphantly accom plished; and as a leading ingredient in the remedy called

Freight rates and postage are an important part of commerce. Much of the traders pros perity depends upon freight charges, and Mr. Jones was emphatically in favour of cheap rates. He maintained he would 'not' give s. 67 penny as subsidy for the postage of letters, and thinks the £120,000 that Australia pays for the English mall contract an actual loss of money. If the merchant wants cheap and extr quick postage let him pay the difference himself. The rest of the community should not be taxed for his private purposes. It is because the American is so well able to land his goods all over the world more cheaply,' regularly," and quickly than his competitors that he has main«. tained an enormous advantage.”
