THE CHINESE MEDICINE MAN.

BY ALLEYNE IRELAND.

From the earliest time the Chinese have de-

voted in great deal of attention to the study of medicine; and they have evolved a complicated system full of the most curious, and eccentric elements.

In medicine, as io so many other things, the Chinese appear to have been the first in the field. But if it appears to us remarkable that Bearly 4,000 years ago there was a well-defined Icience of medicine in China, it is certainly not less remarkable, and it is very surely more in- teresting and significant to find; that Chinese medical practice and Chinese medical theory are practically the same to-day, as they were when Joseph was selling corn in Egypt.

The thirteenth century pro- duced treatise in twenty volumes on the dis cases of wonten, with the ample title "Foo-fin tatsuen leang-fang:" and the following century added a general medical dictionary in twenty volumes in which the following subjects were treated: Diseases of the large blood vessels, + nervous diseases, diseases of women, eye' dis

entes, diseases of the throat, mouth and teeth, the treatment of fracturés and nɛrow wounds.

Perhaps the most famous Chinese medical book is a work on therapeutics, written during the Ming dynasty (about the fifteenth century), which in the compass of 190 volumes included 2,000 lectures and more than 20,000 prescrip- tions.

From Hongkong for London--Messrs. J. R,

The 'Chinese medicine man is, above all things, a devotee of formal rules, and his diagnosis of disease depends almost entirely on a complicated analysis of the phenomena of

Perrett, 1. B. Fox, Miss Edith, Lysener, Messis, the patient's pulse. To a European or AmeriC. W. Finch and George Sole. For Marseilles can doctor the pulse is, of course, an im portant element in a diagnosis; it may be fast or slow, weak or strong regular or irregu- lar, but with these conditions noted the pulse has told all it can tell to modern medical science.

With a Chinese doctor the pulse is a much more complicated affair. The subject is far too involved to admit of full explanation in a short article, but the following brief account of the Chinese thenry of the pulse will give some indication of the complexity of the matter.

The pulso, according to the Chinese, extends for the breadth of three fingers laid across the right and left wrists, and by subdividing the pulse in various ways as, for instance, by taking note of the pulse at the point nearest to the wrist or farthest from it, twelve distinct pulses are recognized Each of these is supposed to indicate the condition of one or another of the principal parts of the body, such as the heart pulis, the liver pulse, the kidney pulse, and so on.

The complication is increased from the fact —that the significance of the pulse bear changes with the season of the year. Thus a certain kind of beat of the middle pulse on the left wrist may indicate that the patient's heart is in excellent condition in June, and the same kind of beat noted in October may mean that the patient is suffering from some dangerous form of heart disease.

Of course, all this is nothing but mere quackery; but the minute examination of the pulse at both wrists is a solemn farce which is performed without fail each time the doctor pays a visit.

Having determined what is the matter with || bis patiept, the Chinėse medicine man proceeds to administer one or a doren of the preparations which fli bis bulky prescription book. They include many vegetable and a few mineral compounds known to our own dociera, but also A great number which sound very unfamiliar It may be putmeg, ginger, charcoal, mint, sandalwood or camphor; but it is just as likely to be glum, abestos, ground stag's born, dried lizard, gold leaf, spotted
