THE DURIAN.

The following letter signed Charles A. Koch, and dated 6th July, appears in the Times of Caylon:-

When the curator of the Boinnical Gardens; in Ceylon recently read a most interesting and instructive paper on Fruit Culture," he res" marked that "Mr. Russell Wallace, who should be regarded as an authority, said that

eating "Durian was a sensation worth a

voyage to the East. If, therefore, the fruit could be eaten in England without the no cessity of a long voyage it should be worth a great price." Now, in the early days 1856, I accompanied my friend, colleague, and Archdeacon, the Rev. Walter Chambers, to pay my first visk to Sir James Brooke (Rajah' of Sarawak), in whose company I found the famous naturalist (Darwin's colleague and friend), Mr. Alfred, Russell Wallace. He might have enten bis first “durian" when he was in the Celebes collecting information about the Bird of Paradise; and if he really cared for [771❘ the fruit he had plenty of them in Sarawak, which was a durian-land. Mr. MacMillan has given us Wallace's opinion of the "durian"; and now I would like to produce the observa. tion of a Bishop who had once been the De, monstrator of Anatomy of King's College, Lon don. On his arrival at Singapore, after a voyage round the Cape lasting five months, he ate or rather tried to eat this malodorous "but

Once upon a time at Pulo-dingi (high island) a large number of Orang Laul (literally men of the sea, or sea-people), ́sea-gypsies, gathered themselves together there. The cause was d large crop of "durians;" and six large boateful of Mora islanders had travelled by sea a “dis- tance of 185 miles," to partake of this fascinat jog fruit.

H.E. the Governor [of Ceylon] made an ab- servation on the "durian" which was very ap posite and impartial; he thought "it was a providence of nature not to extend too much the production of "durian." The flavour of it was such, as was remarked by Mr. MacMilan, that it was worth a voyage to the East to try the fruit, but my experience would apply that to the "first part of the voyage."

I was very bruised and my legs cut, and one wound on my head and two smaller ones. - - * I was doring about 6.10 am. when the house suddenly began to rattle in the most ap. palling way: 1 seized baby and thought 1 must fly to the nursery and get the children out of the house, and then I was on the floor by the side of the bed with masonry pouring down on my back and head and legs, I never expected to come out alive, and I could only pray

that the end, might not be too prolonged,

and 1 felt that another five minutes and

should be suffocated. A big wardrobe saved my life, as it fell forward and was stuck by some barms and so made a petrool over me. I shouted for help. My servants bebaved splendidly, but at firsť didn't bear my calling; but, mercifully, one suddenly heard, and as soon as they gave me air. I kept one to take some of the weight off me, and in half-an-hour I was out. The first thing I did was to send flying for water and washed out baby's mouth and handed her up to the bearer, and as each servant arrived I sent them to the nursery,

That was terrible waiting for Arthur till the Thursday; he arrived at 6 a.m., baving travelled (from Mian Miry without stopping, and walking up from i a.m., as the roads are all destroyed and we were cut off, and the world knew nothing of our calamity for 26 hours after, A mounted infantry man was sent with cables and wires jo or 40 miles to, the nearest un-

harmed telegraph. It is a mercy Arthur wasn't

here, as otherwise he must have been killed too, as our bed is smashed and D. says the place where I was thrown was the only place of safety in the whole house. wonderful the way provisions, doctors, nurses, etc., have been hurriéd up.".
