I had heard that the remarkable specimens

of the African dwarf race pow at the Hippo. drome were very shy, somewhat gruff, and dif. ficult of approach | but I found this not to be the car. When, through the kindness of the manager, Mr. Fred Trussell, 1 was granted a private interview, they were seated, with grave dignity, in their little chairs. The two women,

One of them was doing very cleverly some needlework. The ladies, all through, sat perfectly still and inactive. It was impossible for me to induce them to dance. In fact the Arab Interproter from the Sudan asserted -they hava no idea of a real dance.

A gentleman present made the youngest of the men, who is about eighteen-a very high age among them -do some shuttlecock play, and this at once awoke interest among the others, the women still excepted 1 then lifted the oldest ant tallest, the venerable bearded chieftain, Mongani, who is between thirty and fony, from his chair, and kept him for a while. across my arms, which he evidently enjoy. ed, laughing very much. Having deposited bim again in his seat, and kneeling, before him, so as not to overtop him too much, deavoured to invite him to a kind of trial of strength, with interlaced fingers of the right band. Whilst the heads of these dwarfs ate large and quite qui of proportion, their hands are extremely delicate and finely-shaped. So also are the chieftain's feet. But, though I made no resistance to his attempt at overcom ing my hand, and though the Arab interpreter, who speaks their language, encouraged him to do his athletic best, I soon anw that the pigmy. chiefrain had very little strength in his fil

Years ago, when the Zulus were here, who came to ondon co board the same ship in which Sr Theophilus Shepstone arrived, who certified to me the racial genuineness of those #tout African warriors, I had also, at a private view, a trial of strength; by means of interlaced fingers, with their Medicine Man. Strange to say, I overcame him without too much dificul. ty, though only after a struggle of some minutes.

This inue upset she o'here most exceedingly, their Medicine Man being looked upon as gifted with powers of a supernatural kind. At the war-darce which followed on the platform, where 1 remained, the irritated chieftain, who, different in features from the others, had a somewhat Arab or Semitic physiognomy, evidently wi hed to give me a taste of his anger. Ordering his men, by loud shouts, to swing their knobkerries, when wheeling round, as close as possible to my face, he did his worst to frighten me. With crossed arms watched the performance close. ly, being resolved, at the first sign of real nale, danger, to hurl the next man 'down the plat. form. Fortunately the whole ended peacemings, ably.

Gochulco, E Lopez, M. ed with the mankind of six times. So they may be forgiven for their myths. Homer, Hesiod, Aristotle, Pling, Ovid, Strabo, and others of the old world, alt mentioned dwarf races. Shipping Report.

Str. Loosok from Bangkok --From soth to 21st inst., rough sen and heavy squalls, tow barometer,

It was fabled among the Greeks that a Queen Mother of the Pigmies, in Middle Africa, of the name of Gerana, was worshipped by them like Str Flangang from Chinking:-There to a deity. Being indignant at the coniempt these Rwatow light variable winds, and fine weather, Dwarfs had for the Hellenic deities, especially thence 10 port light variable winds, and fre for Here (Juno) and Artemis (Diana), Geranaquent heavy rain squallt. was, by the Greek Goddesses, changed into a

Crane, with the injunction of making war upon Str. Coulsdon from New York-Fine wea- their own Pigmy people. (Geranos, in Greek, |ther throughout, till 18′′ of North Lat, was meant a Crane; hence the Queen's name.) | reached when typhonie disturbances were ob- This is alluded to in Ovid's Metamorphoses served, wind from NNE, E, and SE (v, goga.) Every year a flock of Cranes, therefore, was said to come into Africa to make' war upon the Pigmies.

I should not wonder if the Cranes were simply a mythological transmogrification of a long legged human tribe, who was frequently at war with the Negrito tribe, who was short logged. This latter bodily characteristic of the Pigmies is already mentioned by Herodotus, Aristotle, who had a fine scent for truth and fact covered over by lables, though speaking Also of the Cranes as coming from Skythian regions to the lakes from which the Nite issues, for the purpose of making war upon the Pigmies, yet adds: "It is, however, not a fable, but there is in reality a race of little men and horses there, who dwell in caves. Now, in Skythian regions, there were, in high anti quity, Aryan tribes of Getic, or Gothic, kin. ship.

The ancients knew, too, that there were real Dwarf tribes in Thrace, where they had evident. ly been overmastered by the tail, long-legged Invaders of Gerle kinship; also remnants of Dwarf tribes in Asia Minor-namely, in Carig: and Lydia-whose ruling populations, different from the Dwarfs, belonged to the Great Thrak lan stock. In Arabia and India, even up to the northern Thule, Dwarf races had existed, ac cording to classic testimony.

We find them mentioned, Indeed, in the Edda, the Norse Scripture, as a creation pre- vious to that of mankind; so, too, in the Nibe lungen Lied These fabulous statements look like poetic glimpics of an Evolution process in Nature. The northern dwarfs are always de scribed as excellent smiths—a word which had a wider sense then, being applied to various Aris, The Pigmies at present here, though so backward in other respects, are still clever in the forging of their weapons. Thus only they could, indeed maintain their existence against human enemies and against wild animals.

It would lead us too far to refer to what Schweinfurth, Marno, Long, Junker, Bobadorff Lenz, Du Obaille, Pogge, Wisemann, Wolf, Von Francois, Serpa Pinto, Wilson, Baumann, Stahlmann, Stanley, and others recorded from what they had heard or seen. The Pigmies at the Hippodrome call themselves furia By the Sudanese Arabs, as the interpreter said, they aro called Burmo. I had wished to ask them, even as i had done year ago in the

Vaucis in Port.
