FORTUNES WON, ON THE DERBY,
A WINNER OF £150,000. Each year there are more fortunes won and - lost on the Derby shan on any other race in the world and the money that annually changes hands over that great classic event has been estimated at upwards of £3,000,000.
For enormous individual wing the truly son. sational Derby of 1867 undoubtedly holds the record. On this Mr. Henry Chaplin was re- ported to have won as niuch as E150,000 by the extraordinary victory of his much-feered at colt, Hermit; and of the few other persons who backed this rank nutsider, there were five who wele zaid to have made as much as £15,000
fach.
Nor can these huge winnings be at all won. Adered at when it it remembered that the long odds of 65 to 1 against this horse were freely given, und, indeed, in most cases offered in Vaio,
Not in addition to the instances already quos ed there were some highly sensational wins. It is on record that a sporting purveyor of meat in one of the northern suburbs of London made more out of herselflesh that day than he did in all his life out of beef. He must have backed Hermit with all the money he was worth or could raise, for he netted the enormous sum of £100,000 by the animal's `victory.
Another notable win was that of an unsere pulous subcitor's clerk who "borrowed" from bis employer's cashbox a round sum of £100 to speculite on the race. In this way he made for himself finite short of £7,000, and was able to replace the "borrowed" money before its abstraction could be detected. Like all others who put their money on lenni, fortune fay -oured him as it does only once in a lifetime.

THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH WEDNESDAY, JULY 19. 1905.
CHINESE IN SINGAPORE.
Is his report for god upon the Chinese Fro tectorates, Mr. Warren, D. Barnes, Secretary
for Chinese Affairs, states that the number of mmigrants who arrived from ports in China was 204,795, being a reduction of 7 per cent, upon the figures for 1951 which were the high- est ever known, e ascribes the falling off in immigration partly to the stackness of trade in the Colony and the Federated Malay States but principally to better harvests in South China and a lower price there of the staple food-rice. There is no reason to believe that the opera tions of the recruiting agency for the Transvant have as yet had any effect upon the number of our immigrants,
The great majority of the arrivals in Siugn pore are, of course, passengers en route to other place. The number who arrived in Penang as 67,693 or twelve per cent lesson in the The returns of movement of population Federated Malay States nieo show a decrease a immigration." The number of adult female immigrants was 14.395 showing a reduction of one per cent only on the total for 1993 #bich way the highest previously known. It is very satisfactory to find that the proportion of fe
male to male among adult immigrants is
endily rising.
In Singapore Ave unlawful societies were successfully dealt with, thirty aliens connected with them being banished. Two of these
cities had assumed the names and ritual of Triad Societies but there is no reason to believe"} hat the old "Dangerous' acieties" are reviy ng. A registered Hailam Society the "Sin am Hap" was dissolved for complicity with one of those Triad Societies.
In Penang action was taken to break up a Suciety called the "Penglong" and three of the headmen were banished. This Saciely has been giving trouble in Penang and Province Wellesley for many years. The ocieties which Hive trouble now are keots of bid characters
who group themselves round one or two in. dividuals and live upon blackmail extorted from their more peaceable neighbours. They Pre rather " long.frms” than organised Socie ties and it is only by the banishment of the aliens who are the moving spirits in them that Pretty much theme thing happened in the they can be successfully dealt with. The suc 1893 Derby, when all the money won went in cess of the action taken in Singapore was main to the pockets of a mere handful of people. outsider that ever won the Derby. According to a London sporting journal, one bookmaker cleared a fortune of upwards of £10,000 by this quite unexpected esult,
As some readers will remember, the adds were no less than 100 to 1, and the fortunate few who 'put their money on this horse expe- rienced better luck than they ever will again. A certain nobleman who was induced, same. what against his will, to risk,a Gino note on jeddah, found to his astonishment at the con-
clusion of the race that he had made a cool £10,000 by his venture.
The same agreeable surprise awaited a Lon. don publican who always endeavours to have 450 on the Derby. But on this occasion, by backing the outsider, he was able to more than make good all his previous Imses on favourites, for he won the substantial sum of £5,000.
From Melbourne, Australia, it was reported that a working man had won a not inconsider. able fortune over the same meinirable Derby He had taken a share is one of the many "sweeps" that are promoted in that and every other Australian town, with the result that Jeddah fell to him with the pinnier prize of £4,000.
In a guinea sween, organised amongst the members of a well-known London club, the total subscriptions amounted to £1,200, ol which sum the lucky drawer i Jeddah took at bin share the substantial prize of £700.
It was some thirteen years ago that Sir Hugo managed to match tire Blue Riband of the
63 aliens were inished during_the year as against go in the previous year. Twenty-eight of these men were banished as being habitual criminals, the rest as being concerned with

To the ordinary reader it may be news that John Gully perhaps the most famous prize. fighter this country ever produced, made at least ball-a dozen furtunes out of the great Epsom event. Moreover, he was one of the only three racehorse owners who have ever suc: ceeded in winning the Derby three times over since the institution of the race.
It is generally believed that he made more money out of it thin any other sporisman of his own or any other day. On the occasion of his third wie with Andover, in the year 1854. he was said to have won in wagers nearly £100,000; but of thai sum he was able to obr ...tain payment of only about £ 5,000.
