THE BRAIN MARKET.

....[Continued from page d.]

MR. J. WILLIAMS BENN ON THE CLERK IN ACTION,

4You ask for the view of the man of affaire 'who has beau closely identified with the busi- ness life of London," repeated Mr. Bean-on

the value of the City clerk as a machine, si a thinking individual capable of judgment, initiative, and independent action-what chance be has of rising-how far the old idea of rising

• from office boy to "boss' in attainable ?

"Well, as to your first point. The clerk's value as a mere machine is lessening. The competent girl' with her shorthand and type- ̈r writing, and, now, a good knowledge of book- keeping is preferred. She is frequently more adaptable, more pliable, if I may so express it." But for the difficulty of mixing the sexes in the same office the 20,000 London female clerks would be trebled to-morrow, The chances of the young man who can offer nothing but mere pen pushing are, in my judgment, becoming smaller by degress and beautifully loss."

Then your advice to all promising bays is avoid clerking?"

SPORT OR SACRIFICE. "Not at all. The boy or youth who betrays

the qualities of 'judgment and initiative will not lack preferment. In whatever 'line' be Andi himself they will lead him at once to specialise be it in a shipping office or a Mincing-inne salercom. le will sacrifice some of the sport, or that aimless pleasure- seeking which afBicts so many of our young people, and acquire, by means of evening classes, or in some way or another, the know- ledge that is worth money,"

"But you would not deprive the young clerk of the recreative side of life?"

many

"By no means. But, unfortunately, in houses of business you can see quite clearly that it is sport first and business efficiency second, I think it was Mr. John Morley who said the other day that the dif- →ference between the German and the British youth might be thus expressed: The British

youth thanked God he had a father. The German father thanked God he had a son,

That exactly expresses my idea. I agree with Mr. Haldane, there is no lack of employ. ment for the man who takes the trouble to specialise in his business. What one sees ja too many establishments is not a few young man who evidently want to get off' rather than 'get on. Don't misunderstand me. I am not advocating long hours and nigger-drive ing, but I have known some vacuous young clerks 'shunted' just because their employers bad noted-unknown, perhaps, to them-that the main thought of the closing half hour was how to get so washed and brushed in the firm's of time that a bolt on the strike of the clock of

was possible,

PRIZES FOR THE SPECIALIST.

"Do you speak from personal experience or observation ?" our reprenentative asked.

"From beth. I have the keenest sympathy with young clerks. They can of entimes dis cover and acquire cone special knowledge - which will make their desk work more valua- ble. The insurance clerk may aim at becom- ing an actuary, the banking clerk may know something of money, the railway clerk may develop into a railway statistician and traffic expert, and so on. I know the prizes are not numerous, but I stick to my point that specialists are wanted.

"And then," continued Mr. Benn, "with regard to the question of rising? Under the modern conditions of business the road to the partner's room is not often through the count- ing-house. It would newher be kind oor true to tell every office boy that he carries "a batun in his knapsack. I would rather direct the gaze of many in some workshop direction.

"Once get rid of the stupid notion that clerk. ing is more respectable' than, say, lone dres sing, and the field is unlimited. I am very glad that Carlyle's sense of the dignity of labor a gradurly obtaining To indicate trades which offer a career for clever boys would be to give a list of most of our leading industries. Here, again; it is the specialist who is wanted. The stonemason who brings a, correct know. ledge of mouldings and forms to bear on his work is the man who will be sought for by the Architect. Mr. Haldane has already spoken of industrial chemistry, electricity, engineering, and the mining industries as offering careers for our clever boys, and, really, I think a better prospect than the desk.

CAUSES OF DEORNERACY.

*Two factors have been fatal to the career of many a youth. First, that he must begin to earn a little to help the family, and second that he must be doing something 'respectable. 'I know it is hard for many struggling parents to forego the help which the children bring. but now the L.C.C. and other institutions are prepared to help parents of the right sort, and a golden dividend is generally the reward of those who invest in early and prolonged special training for the intelligent youngster. It is in that direction that we shall be able to cope with our specially-trained foreign rivals.

As for the degeneracy of the clark, should say, without hesitation, that the chief causes are drink and, perhaps, gambling. A man with a sedentary occupation is peculiarly liable to the seductive influences of the former *More, thinking inso drinking' would, I venture to think, be a good motto for many & counting

house.

"Don', please, imagine that 1 regerd clarks as a drunken class. I think the ratio of sobriety greater among them than among many other workers. But if the clerk drinks his berthi goes, whereas the clever artisan may be a "boozer and still get a job. Thank God," said Mr. Bean in conclusion "the National Drink Bill is going down, and as it goes down I am sure

England will go up.-Er.

The strangest so called religious sect in any part of the world in the Holy Order of Knee Benders, which is to be found on the shores of Seneca Lake, in the State of New York, and who worship with their faces turned towards the sun. Their name arises from the fact that the members do most of their daily work and conduct their worship upon their kuces. The founder was a farmer who maintained that he was commanded in a vision to spend the rest of his life knealing. As almost equally strange sect is that of the Runner-Smotherers, in Russia. When any member of this extraordinary sect is seized with an illness believed to be mortal, the member's and is haraned by a woman

whose title is "The Smptherer." This cere

mony is usually performed in their secret praying room. While palms are sung the smotherer performa her task with a small cusbjas held over the sick person's note and mouth, the body afterwards being buried in some remote spot.
