HÜMONOUS BURGLAR.
Edward Fay, days a London journal, is almost as clever a comedian us he is a burglar. When he was cominitted for trial at Weilminster he "tipped" amb sion for the City and Suburbao, And at the North London Sessions, when he pleaded guilty to burglary at Colonel Froom's house at Kensington Gate, he made the Court rear with laughter. After the Judge bad been told that Fay had been to prison for robbing houses belonging to the Duke of Norfolk and the Bishop of London, Fay was asked if he had anything to say.

Fay hesitated a moment, and then replied i "Yes, I think I can conscientiously say I have. For the last five years I have been working for The Government chiefly, and I've learnt a very

IN PRAISE OF BAD CIGARS.

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing'as a bad or a'good cigar. There are cigars that one man likes and another detests, but one is in trinsically as good or as bad as another. The
taste for jobacco in any form being wholly an acquired tiste, all tobacco, to the man who has neglected to acquire this taste, is equally oau- seous. We learn, with much pains and expen- diture of meney, the taste for expensive cigars, and a dislike of all others, and we then assume that high-priced cigars are good and that all others are bad. Had we reversed this process, acquired a taste for cheap cigars, we shouki call them good, and high-priced cigars bad.
Now, there are many reasons why we should alf smoke the so-called bad cigars instead of the good uner. Of course, the most obvious reason is that the former are the cheaper, Why train yourself to sminke shilling cigars when, with an equal amount of training, you could smoke penny cigars with perfect satis faction?
If every man in London who smokes good cigars were hereafter to confine himself to penny cigars, the amount of money thus annu- ally saved would sufice to enable the County Council to give comfortable pensions to-old and deserving smokers, and to provide instruc tion in the public schools in the art of smoking five Hamburg cigars for a penny,

But it is the hold and inestimable influence exerted by the bail cigar in promoting the love of home and family that constitutes its chief virtue.
Among those who are familiar only with good cigars, er those, who, whether through misfortune or vicious propensities, have ac quired the detestable habit of never using to- bacco, the perfume of bad cigars held to be objectionable, and the smoker thereof is an
unwelcome guest
Hence he refrains from going outside his own home to smoke. He reserves the pene. trating odour of his cigars for those whom he loves best. It is the incense which he offers anly in his own domestic temple.
has also been commonly observed that bad cigars are invariably selected by women who wish to give welcome presents to the nien whom they love. When the wife of the smoker of good cigars gives him a box for which she has paid five shillings, he must either make a hypocritical pretence of being pleased, or be must show his disappointment, and wound his wife's affections.
No one can tell how many happy homes have been broken up because the husband was a smoker of goo (cigars, and his wife gave him bad ones. But to the experienced smoker of bad cigare all gifts of cigars are equally wel come, and whenever his wife, or his sweet- heart, gives him a box of the cheapest cigars in the market, he is filled with gratitude, and both giver and receiver are happy.
THE CHARM OF VARIETY.
There is little variety to be found in smoking good cigais, but the bad cigar is full of inci dent. There are certia Italian cigars which are nearly jet black, and have the appearance of being excessively strong. In point of fact, they are really the mildest cigars that are made, and their colour is due to the liquorice and molasses in which they are soaked during the process of manufacture.

For the ambitious young man, who wishes the credit of smoking strong cigars without the internal remorse which too often results there- from, these cigars are obviously just the thing. This particular "weed is rolled more care lessly than any other Italian civis, if we may judge by the cuticas substances which find their way into it. At one moment a bit of woollen yam will blare up in his cigar; at another the rich flavour of smouldering bits of leather will mingle with the original Änvour of the tobacco
Occasionally small pieces of india-rubber find their way into these cigars. The flavour of burning rubber is seldom relished by one who is accustomed to it. But one cannot des ay that when it comes to the smoker unex- pectedly it adds greatly to the wosith of inci- dent which characterises this remarkable Ita Jian brand
Bmaking it sometimes said to be, uneventful and monotonous, except, of coarse, when the smaker is practising où his first cigar, but there. is nothing manotonous about an Italian civar. It unites the joys of exploration and discovery with the charms of liquorica and molasses and all for the absurd price of a halfpenny! Yet there are men who actually prefer to pay & abilling for a Havana cigar barren of everything except tobacco.
A GERMAN RIVAL.
There are other bad cigar which have their especial attractions. In particular, there lea cigar manufactured at Hamburg, and artificially perfumed, which is warranted to surprise the most hardened and experienced nose. Except by reckless men who care not for their lives, it can only be smoked at home, Even in that seclusion it is said to have a fatal affect upon the family cat, and it should therefore be shan. ned by all cat lovers.
