PROPOSED COMPANIES' AMALGAMATION,

On Friday next the shareholders of Howarth Erskine & Co. and Riley Hargreaves, Ltd hold their respective extraordinary general meetings to decide upon the final formalities concerning the amalgamation of these two great industrial enterprisea That ainaigama: tion is strictly their own business, and the Straits Tinges neither favors nor ania- gonises the matter. It is, however, within the provinte of this paper to criticize the proposed combination from a public point of view and to conjecture as to what will be the effect thereof on the interesis of the colhay and the community. Riley Hargreaves and Co. and Howarth Erskine, Ltd., were both originally private concerns. Both firms deve- loped and prospered, thinks to the ability and energy of their managers.. "Within recent years they were both acquired by limited liability companies. Riley Hargreaves in 1899, and Howarth Erskine's in 1901 —the orignal owners retaining large interests in each company. The listed capital of the concerns to-day stands as follows:-

Riley Hargreaves Howarth Erskine

1,200,000

Total $3,075,000

If we add to that amount, the sum of $291,000, which figures upon the banks of the respective concerns an reserve fand, we reach a gross total of $2, 6;,000 If we add to that, again, a rough estimate of $235,000, as profits since the Just accounts were rendered, we bring the total to $1,600,000. That is a large sum. Yet, if we go by the presently quoted market values of the stock in both concerns, we find that

the total reaches more than twice that figure; vis:-

The only other trip business on record in the South comprises the fixture of a steamer to inad at Hongay-for Amoy, and another one for the voyage Touran to Swatow, details as per ap. pended list of settlements.

As for Yangtse freights, latest Northern re ports ventilate anything but hopeful views on the situation in respect of the next few months. There is and probably will be only a limited demand, and rates seem inclined to weaken yet further.

YESTERDAY afternoon H. E. the Governor, Six Matthew Nathan, was "at home" at his sam- mer residence, "Mountain Lodge," the Peak, when, notwithstanding the threatening weather a goodly number of visitors, about aço in all, called to pay their respects to flis Excellency. For about half an hour the lawas surrounding the Lodge presented a very gay and animated appearance, but then the rain storm'interfored and sent everybody hurrying into the house for shelter. The entertainment there took the form of a large tea-party in the reception rooms, only a few persons remain ing in the marquees which had beco erected on the lawa. The band of the West Kents, safely sheltered in a marquee, livened the pro- ceedings by playing a very choice selection of music during the afternoon. When the hour for departure came there was a great scramble for chairs, as several of the guests, deceived by the discharged theirs, and the telephone was set to fine appearance of the weather on arrival, had work to order up a relay of chairs from the depot at the terminus-This afternoon His Ex- cellency is "at home" again, but this time to his juvenile friends, and as all sorts of out-door. amusements, in the way of games, races for prizes, etc., have been prepared for their enter- tainment, it is fortunate the weather has turned out to fine.

In these days when picture postcards and illustrated souvenirs of well-known cities are all the rage, it is satisfactory to note that the enterprising spirits of Hongkong are not at all inclined to lag, belund the times. ... In this re- spect Messrs. A Chee & Co. have proved that they are prepared to meet the popular demand, by issuing a beautifully illustrated "Souvenir of Hongkong," a pictorial letter-card case, and a series of picture post cards which ate anique in their way. We have received samples of these productions from Messrs. A Chee & Co. and it is tho figure of speech to say that they surpass anything that has been seen in this line in Hongkong, The "Souvenir of Hongkong," is a dainty and most artistic brochure, containing 21 photographs, each of which is a character sketch of Hong- kong's life and environment. The photographs are remarkably clear and distinct, and to thos who know nothing of life in the East they should come as a revelation. Even the peo ple of Hongkong, whose eyes are satiated by the numerous and unending beauties of the Colony will realise once again the many pic. turesque features which surround them." As a present and as a keepsake the "Souvenir” takes first place. Then there is the letter card- $3,200,500 $3,200,000 case, which is a new idea in Hongkong. With- in the covers of what is practically a return post-card, there sic eight photographs of xecnés in Hongkong. The pictorial letter card,” as it 10,000,000 is called, passes through the post at the same

rate as a letter. With regardto the picture port 70,000 cards, Messi A.
