The student of passing events who has the time, and what is equally necessary, the know ledge, to take an intelligent interest in seafar

DONE BY TRYING,

| Nobody can tell what he can do till he tries. When a thing ought to be done the modera spirit moves us to keep working away at it until it is done. In the face of this idea the' "Impossible vanishes. Where there's a will, there's a way.. "If we could but rob cod ilver all of its sickening taste and smell and then combine it with two or three other ingredients, we should possess the, hest remedy in the world for certain diseases that are now practically.. incurable," So said a famous English physi- cian twenty-five years aza "But it will never be done," he added. "You can no more tum end liver oil into a pleasant paintable medicine. than you can turn the Codfish itself into a Bird.. of Paradise.". Yet he lived to admit that in

In the days of the clipper, shipbuilding was an art wherein the poetry of "fine" lines and graceful design had to be 'seriously considered, and the result was that from the British and American shipbuilding yards there passed into the water scores of wooden and composite vessels which were yachts so far as appearance and speed were concerned, but traders in reality, in that to them was entrusted the carriage of the com merce from the overseas colonies and foreign | EXCELLENT CUISINE.

In the halcyon days of the sailing clipper speed was the great idea, and the time occupied in the run out to the colonies or home from Foochow with "the first of the season's tea," was the first thought of the skippers who held command. Gone are those ships-scattered to every corner of the globe. The wandering sailor-man who comes ashore from a "ramp" steamer in a colonial part may still see many of these old stagers, ending their days as coal or frozen meat hulks. There is a society for the preservation of ancient historic buildings, and one almost wishes that there existed a similar organisation for the protection of some of the more famous of those packets. In their

youth and prime they played no inconsiderable part in the progress of the world's trade; on their decks have walked many whose names are recorded in history. It is only idle senti ment, true, but one could wish that these old ships had rather ended their careers battling: with be sexs over which for so many years they had moved in triumph. It would be an interesting, assibly endless-study to trace out the whereabouts of the still existing East Indiamen, with their quaint gallaried sterns, the China ca clippers with their sharp bows and "sweet entry," and the fine-lined colonial traders, But one fears that it would be a disheartening task, ending in naught but re gret at the way in which the mighty have fallen. The hulks of the world's seaports could tell many a strange tale, their coul-begrim- med, filthy decks have been the scene of many comedies, deeds of bravery, and also, possibly, of tragedy,

About six inches of tar-engrained rope known to sailormen us " ratline," lie before the writer. Could that bit of ancient shipfitting speak it would spin a yarn of old-time seafaring more embralling than many modern romance. Ten
