of metallic iron. We have now received a By Transfer fcom bulk sample of about five tons of blue ground, and we are taking the necessary steps to have the same washed to nareṛtnin, whether it is diamondiferous or not. A discovery of smoke- less coal was recently reported by Mr. Robert- soa to have been made at Jambongon, which is a small island north-east of Borneo. We are carrying on: active prospecting operations to locate the seam from which the coal must have come, and the shareholders will be advised of any developments of importance. In addition to the minerals I have mentioned, indications have from time to time been reported of gold, tin, wolfram, chromite sand, antimony, and copper. We have therefore abundant proof that the territory covered by the concession is rich la mineral values, and should amply repay our expenditure in prospecting and develop ing the same. (Applause.)

in reply to a question by a shareholder, the Chairman stated that if the result from the washing of the blue ground were sati-factory the shareholders would be advised.

The proceedings then terminated.

Hengal, our yarn market has continued moderately active and a fairly large general business has been effected, medium grades attractin by far the largest amount of attention in consequence of their comparative cheapness. Latest advices from Bombay make that market stronger with increasing prices. Holders here, however, are anxious sellers and inccting market freely. The market closes steady. Exchange.--We quote to-day on India at

The hostilities between Japan and Russia, especially the activity in operations in the neighbourhood of the ports of Northern China, bad, the effect of curtailing shipments thence to the South, while stringency in the money market, more particularly at Tientsin, interfer eil with the export of produce; but these draw- backs to trade were neutralised by transpurt requirements leading to the chastering of inany steamers and consequent withdrawal from competition for freight on the coast. The earnings of the Fleet shew a satisfactory increase over those of the previous year. The destruction of the steamer Lip Sang, when on

a voyage from Newchwang lo Shanghai, by a Russian torpedo-boat de- strayer, deprived the company of the services of a valuable vessel, and the company has also to deplore the lass by fue of the s.s. Yuen Vo on the River Yangleze, with sacrifice. it is feared, of many lives. These losses have not 'prejudici lly affected the underwriting account, and the Board are pleased to report that there have been but few minor accidents; this account closes with a balance at credit of £241,550. 183. 6d. Full depreciation has, as usual, been provided on the Fleet amounting to £64,018, 51, and after mak- ing allowance for general charges in London and China, interest and income tax, u transfer of 10,000 has beeo, made to the credit of general reserve fund. Exchange has been favourable during the year, and the Board have been able from this source to add a further sum of £10,000 to the general reserve fund, making it now £120,000, and to place 1,999, tos, 7d. to exchange reserve account
