To do this, however, it would be necessary for two players to have a pre-arranged code of signals, and to be vare of playing at the same |lable, and, even then, their code could only be
brought into use when they cut as partners.
Such a code would be quite easy to arrange, owing to the various formule which are used in passing the declaration. For instance, "I leave it," might mean a very bad hand. "Will you make the trump please?" a fairly good all round hand, but not quite strong enough for no

THE GREEN ISLAND CEMENT COMPANY, LIMITED,
This may make a good subject for a sensa tional picture, but it does not bear looking into by the practical player.
The lady in question would have no control whatever over the cards dealt to her in three hands out of the four, and oven when it is har own dea', to imagine that the can give an up- due proportion of good cards aither to herself or her partner is to credit her with an amount of manual conjuring skill such as would be the envy of a Bertram or a Makelyna.
If cheating is to be done at all at bridge it will not be done in this way.

played in a country house for exceptionally high points.. A certain hɩdy dealt the cardi and left it to her partner, who declared "No
* Trumps,” and put down 100 acer.
As the hand was played but it transpied that the deals, who had passed the call, held six hearts, including four by bonou a, and the quer tion was naturally asked, what could have in- duced her to pass the call with such a hand? No satisfactory explanation was forthcoming, and the inference was sufficiently obvious, thai her partner must have told her by some private code of signals to leave it to him.
CLUMSY ATTEMPT.
If it was an attempt at cheating, it was an extremely clumsy one, as it should have been obvious that suspicions must arise, when the strength of her hand came to be shown in the play of the cards.
Apart from the question of collusion between two players, there are various individual ways of imparting or tetapting unfair information, which can only be classed under the head of cheating.
Some players unintentionally cheat by undue healtation or undue hasta in passing the declaration to their partner.
This is so much the case that many sugges tions have been made to legislate for it, but nothing has yet been suggested to quite meet the case.
Perhaps the best suggestion was that a small sand-glass, taking fifteen or twenty seconds to run out, should be provided a regular adjunct of every bridge table, and that the dealer, under pain of a penalty, should speak directly, but not before, the sand glass ran out.
was
This, however, seemed rather an arbitrary measure, and one that was likely to give rise to considerable bickering, so it decided to leave it entirely to the good taste of the individual player, and it has succeeded very well.---
An extraordinary case occurred some threa years ago st a well-known Continental club. The American rules were in force there- and under the American rules the penalty for a revoke is not the same alternative penalty as ours, but only "three tricks taked from the offending player and added to those of his Apponent "
"NO TRUMPY."
It was the first deal of the subber, "No trumps" was dechired by the dealer, und was inutiled by the eldest hand-the player on the dealer's left, who held ace, king, queen to eight diamonds.
He led, the king, Dummy had none of the sun, and the other two followed. He then led the queen, and again the other two followed ruit, leaving only the knave against him. He then led the ace, and his partner and the dealer Tebounced

Eventually the dealer produced the missing card, and the game proceeded, bụi this was nothing more or less than absolutely cheating. Do you see where it came in?
If the diamonds all fell, the doubler made aight tricks, scoring 48 and game; but if the Wave were held up through the revoke untli the fourth round, the dealer made every other trick, and won four. by cards; three of these would be taken away from him for the revoka penuity, but he would still be left with the odd trick, and would score 34 to ble opponent thing.
