Strong suspicions wers enterisined at one time, that the battle- ship Yorkima was sunk, and it was believed that the cruiser was also sunk, which facts the Japanese Government had, however, kept secret. The cruiser Takushige, sunk by a mine on the night of December 11th while engaged in the blockade of Port Arthur, was also launched | at Elswick, in 1897. She was twin-screw and; of 4,300 tons displacement, and capable of steaming 24 knots. Her complement was 400, and Armament two 8-inch quickfirers in gun- houses on forecastle and poop, ten 4-7-inch quickfirers; twelve fa-p under qu'ckfires; eix 21-pounder quickfirers; and five torpedo tubes, one aboya water in bow.

The destroyer Akatsuki sunk by a mine on the night of May 17th, was launched in 1901. She was of 360 tons displacement, and 31-knot boat, which did more than its estimated spred on trial Rer armament consisted of one iz-pounder quickfirer aft; five 6-pounder

quickfirers, and two torpedo tubes. Her com plement was $5. The Hapatori, sunk by a mins on the night of September 3rd, was about the same size and similarly armed. The former was built at Yarrow and had four fun. nel; the latter was built at Yokosuka, “

The gun-boat Orkima, vunk in collision with

a sister boat in the Liaotung Bay on the night of May 18th, 1904, was a vessel of 640 toàn built ip japan fifteen years ago. Her speed was sixteen knots and she carried Iwelve quick. firers.

The gun-bont Aiago, which struck a sunken rock last November, while engaged in the blockade, was built at Yokosuka in 1887, and was a 12-knot bost of 64 tons Her comple:
