BIGELOW'S OVER-CONFIDENCE.
Milwaukee, April ag. A tell-tala bit of paper accidentally found on the step of the First National Bank by a clark was the direct cause of the $1,500,000 embezzlement of President Bigelow belog dis covered. On Tuesday, James Bird, a book-Colonial Secretary's Office, keeper, working on a set containing, reserve

F. H. MAY, Colonial Secretary.
The discovery dazed him, and he carried it a day in his possession before informing the cashier Mr. Frank J. Kapp, Kapp was thun derstruck and called in Mr. Charles Pfister, the director. Telegrams wern sent immediately te banks carrying every reserve accoupt, and. by Wednesday night the true condition of affairs was apparent. Other book-keppers were questioned. They knew nothing that would throw any light on the affair. The en- try.clerk was positive his entries were correct. It developed later, it is declared, that copies of the form of statement issued by the various banks had been made and new statements written on the proper stationery by the plotters when the real statement arriv. ed and the slip turned over

Confidence has again been restored in bank. ing institutions in Milwaukee, and the run on the First National Bank and the Milwaukee ing affairs have resumed their acimal condition. Trust Company is a thing of the past, and bank.
While the two banks affected are entirely separate institutions, the fact that they occupy adjoining buildings and that some of the First National's officers direct the affairs of the Mil- waukto Trus!' Company caused many of the depositors to believe that one was a part of the other. Before the hour for opening the banks had arrived a meeting of the Milwaukes Clearing-house Association was held, and a committee of that insitution, after examining the assets and collateral of the First National Bank, issued a reassuring report, showing that the bank was perfectly sound. This report was printed in large type on placards and pasted on the windows of the First National Bank, issued a reassuring report, showing that the bank was perfectly sound. The first authentic statement in regard to the cause of the downfall of Frank G. Bigelow, the refulting bank president, was made to | day by an intimate friend of the former banker, In brief, Bigelow's friends attributes the disas← to over-confidence in his business ability; Mr. Bigelow, his filend states, denies empha tically that he lost the money in whoat deals.
"If you were to ask him how the money was spent, he would be unable to tell you," said Mr. Bigelow's friend. "His affairs are in a remarkable tangle. As a matter of fact, he did not intend to be dishonest. He thought ba was a financier. He kept no books, and for odds and ends of all sorts he had bis mlad only as their depositories, 1 am sure I don't know whether it indicates mental weakness on hli part. I can but repeat he supposed he was |n greater business man than he was.
Just when Mr. Bigelow began to take the bank's fonds is a matter I am unable to de termins from anything he says. When an examination of the bank was made last Jane ary nothing was disclosed. For all I know, it did not begin until after that time. There was an absoluto lack of system about anything ha I did, so far as his own affairs were concernede
