British moralists. In 1801 he went to England with several other volunteers to join the frat and study the manoeuvres and general man agemrat of the same. On completing his fought under Comwallis, Nelson, and Colling studios he entered the British Navy and wood, att of whom were attracted by his courage. He took part in the blockading of Toulon and Cadir, and fought on the Spanish coast

On retoming to Russia he was given com- mand of the sloop. Diana and sailed to Kamchatka. But war having broken out between Great Britain and Russia, he was taken prisoner and sent to New Holland, where he was kept for over a year. From this place he at length effected his escape during a violent thunderstorm. When surveying the Kuril Islands he landed on Konnasheery Isla to fill the ship's water tanks, and was there captured by the Japanese, in company with two officers and acveral sailors.

The prisoners were sent to Hokodata and Matimal, from where they escaped, only to be recaptured after wandering for nine days among the mountains. In Hokodata they were confined for seven weeks in iron cages, but in the other places they were well treated. In 18.3 Basile Golovnine was liberated by the in- tervention of a wealthy Japanese inerchant named Takatala Kabib

The following extract, taken from "The Memoirs of His Captivity in Japan," may be of some interest to those who now witness events which he foresaw:-

the inventions of foreigners, so that foreign customs may not be introduced with foreign arts and science. Other nations should thank Providence that Japanese statesmen have this iden, and should try not to give them any reason to change their politics for European oner.

Were a sovereign like Peter the Great to ign over this numerous, clever, imitative, patient, and industrious people, who are cap able of anything, then, with the help of the riches and treasures which lie hidden in the depths of Japan, he would enable them in a few years to conquer the whole Eastern Ocean. What would then happen to the coast dis teicts on the east of Asia and the west of Ame rica, which are so far from the countries that ought to defend them?

Were the Japanese to think of introducing European civilisation and adopting our politics, the Chinese would, find themselves forced to do likewise, and under these circumstances those two mighty nations would give quite aanther turn to European affairs.
