It was then that the real work of peril com- menced, the drifting ice still clustering to the sides of the vessel as the boats were manned and lowered from the davits. Fortunately the the drift was shorewards, and when all was clear a pull for the land, then about three hun dred yards distant, was accomplished without any loss of life. On'a barren shore under the lee of a wild mountain range the shipwrecked mariners found a slight refuge from the bitter [556 gale which followed their landing; but their sufferings were increased by their scarcity of clothing and lack of provisions. And it was in attempting to return to the ship during a lull in the storm to get additional provisions that one of the boats, manned by Mr. Potter, the second officer, and Mr. Stabbs, second en- gineer, with seven of crew, drifted away with

LEVY HERMANOS.
Professor Charles Waldstein of Cambridge. DIAMOND MERCHANTSERWEL
England, Slade professor of fine arts in the university and formerly director of the
18 American School at Athens, has come to this country in the interest of a plan for the systems atic excavation of Herculaneum, which he describes as a vastly more interesting field than Pompeii. The latter was covered to a depth of only about fifteen feet by the outflow of the volcano, while Herculaneum was buried in many places to a depth of eighty feet. Engineers now suggest that the city need not be uncovered to the surface, which would destroy the Italian town of Resian, but that it might be opened as an underground city, light- ed by electricity, making a sort of artificial Mammoth cave with occasional openings to the surface for fresh air and to give, display to particular villas of importance: Land is not too expensive in the town overhead to permit having plenty of these openings wherever de sirable. The chief reason for the proposal to make a city underground is that of economy in-excavation. The restoration would also be saved from the forces of outdoor nature, not- ably the heavy rains, and so could be retained much as an inside exhibit. Pompei and Herculaneum are no more nike, nlthough only eight miles apart, than Coney Island and Newport.
