It must be remembered that niany so-called. "patent" medicines are admitted by the medi cal profession to be of great value, and are frequently recommended by doctors to their patients. In the country districts more es pecially, where doctors are few and far be tween, patent medicines are very popular, and often prove a very efficient substitute for re gular medical prescriptions. It would be
distinct hardship to a large number of colonies that such remedies should be driven not feel inclined to sacrifice their valuable out of the country because their proprietors do rights by allowing the world at large to gain knowledge of their composition. The Star is inclined to think that some convincing reason is required to justify this attempt to regulate the sale of patent medicines. Medical advice is gener lly expensive, and it seems somewhat

FACTS ABOUT HYDROPHOBIA,"
In a book published by Dr. Tuke, one of the editors of the journal of Mental Sclance, on the subject of the "Influence of the Mind Upon the Body," he quotes from the best of authorities and investigators on the causes of hydrophobia, and the following dema ductions are drawn
First, that it may be produced by fear alone. The fear that one has been exposed to the poison is suficient to produce it in some people. There are undoubtedly spontaneous cases of hydrophobia, from fear alone, where there has been no exposure at all. Other cases have been baten and the matter has passed out of the mind entirely. The wound has healed and months have elapsed, then some great nervous strain is brought to bear on the victim, and this seems to have the power of letting loose the latent poisph in the system, and hydrophobla sets in. One case is recited of a girl who was bitten by a dog. Three members of her family were bitten at the same time. Several months after the occurrence, when married. The excitement of the wedding and. had been entirely forgotten, the girl was the occasion produced hydrophobic convel sions, and she died in her husband's arms heen performed. DISEASES OF FISHES,
The Frankfout News states that since, the beginning of the winter term a station for re- search and observation of sick fish has been established at the veterinary high school of Vienna, under the direction of Professor Doc tor Fiebiger. Officials of this institution will investigate the biology and pathology of fish, One of the main objects of the researches will De to study whether certain distares of fish are transmitted to man, and if so, to what extent. The scientific diagnosis of the sick fich is affixed to each compartment containing them. Fishes are to be found suffering from smallpox and others from intestinal cotarh. A dolphin was brought to the instituia, with a disease which was diagnosed no inflammation of the lungs. The director is very relucta...t about- expressing an opinion with reference to the cu
ibility of fish diseases. At any rate, instructive- observations in the field of comparative thera peutics may be expected.
