A certain carbolic acid preparation was highly recommended as a good specific in plague cases, whereupon Mr. Ho Kom Tang at much personal ex- pense and considerable trouble had some thousands of battles of the chemical pre- pated by Dr. Jen Hawk, of the Tang Wah Hospital, and distributed then gratis to the Chinese of the Colony, as well those living in the poorer dis tricts of Canton and surrounding locali ties. We believed that, from the statistics furnished. the result of this beneficent gift has proved highly efficacious, inasmuch as Mr. Ho Kom Tong has this year been again besieged with letters from the interior,

EDWARD SMITH, a ship's fireman, at present unemployed, was this morning placed before Mr. F. A. Hazeland at the Magistracy, charged with being drunk and disorderly and obtaining drinks at the Western flotel on Sunday night. It appears that Smith in company with two friends, went into the hotel and the former called for three drink, flowing this up with an order for three more. Aler partaking of the second supply he ordered a third and the boy asked for payment. Smith took out a purse and told the bay to get change for $10. The boy went upstairs to get the
change, while the three men cleared off. He rushed out, and discovered Smith whom he had arrested The man was senten, ed to thiee weeks' hard labour.
