DR. WOOLHOUGH'S EXPEDITION.
The expedition loft Sydacy in December last, and arrived on January 2 at Sava, where Dr. Woolnough was welcomed by Dr. B. G. Cor. ney. A burricane greeted the visitors. After a little delay, due to the hurricane, in landing the stores, a start was made for the interior of
the main island, Viti Levu. That island is sub-circular to sub-triangular in shape, with ranges of rugged volcanic mountains over 4,000 feet high towards its centro. For the most part; it is covered with very luxuriant tropical vegetation, so dense that it is absolutely neces sary for an expedition traversing it to cut a path through the high reeds and canes and sangled undergrowth. The island measures. about 65 miles from north to south, and 100 miles from east to west. It is drained chiefly by two large, rivers, the Rewa, on the east, flowing from north-west to south-east, and the Sightoke (Sing-a-toke), on the west, flowing from north-east le south-west. The tributa ries of these rivers almost meet towards the porth, and some distance up the Rewa River from its mouth, a tributary river, the Wai-ni-

Dr. Woolnough's earlier geological explora. tion of Viti Levu had proved the fact that under the newer rocks of that island, chiefly lavas, volcanic ath, and soapstone, there exists a more or less extensive area of very nacient rocks such as dorite, genite, and
schist, the relic of a once far greater land, which extended probably to New Calend nin and Australia. It was to the further study of these ancient rocks that Dr. Woolnough in tended to specially devote himself.
From Suva the expedition proceeded to Nau- sori, on the Rewa River, where they were hos pitably entertained by Mr. Gemmel Smith, the

A day later their canoes and canoes-men arrived, and they started on the so-mile canoc voyage for Na- roko-toko-yawa. The rivers were in high flood. Messis, Woolnough and Goddard travelled in one cance, with a crew of four splendid Fi. jan baatmen; while their stores were seal on in a second caade.
