HONGKONG METEOROLOGICAL

SIGNALS.

A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological | signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day They are the same us those at present in use at Shanghai, and will

be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces sarily imply that had weather is expected. The signals are as follows:-

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and drum below in- dientes a typhoon to the North-East of the Celony.

The above signals will, as heretofore, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such posi.

tions or are moving in such directions that in. formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav ing the harbour.

NIGHT BIGNALS.

Two lanterns hoisted vertically indicate bad wanther in the Colony and that the wind is expected to veer.

Two lanterns hoisted horizontally indicate bad weather is the Colony and that the wind is expected to back.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the llarbour Office and on M's Receiving Ship..

LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gale of wind is expected to blow here.

Ferry Company's Pier, Kowloon, WEATHER-FORECASTS and STORM WARNINOS are exhibited on the above boards daily about 11 a.m., and also at other hours, day or night, whenever necessary. Informa tion of importance is also issued by "Express." THE CHINA COAST METEOROLOGICAL REGISTER is exhibited at the same places daily about noon. It contains observations made at Hongkong and at a number of stations in the Far East, together with Remarks, Weather: forecasts, and information regarding the exist ønce and movement; of typhoons based thereon.

SPECIAL INQUIRIES,

Masters of vessels or their agents mays whenever pocosunty, call at the Telegraph Company's Office in Connaught Road and send telegrams is the Observatory making for special information without charge. Such Inquiries may also be sent from the Police Blation at Kowloon Point which is connected with the Observatory by telephone.
