gress of naval construction is the continued growth in the size of battleships and armoured cruisers. At the present day the displacement. of the former has reached, and in some cases exceeds, 10,000 tons. Each of these huge vessels, with their powerful machinery, vant quantities of armour, and commanding ama- ments of heavy guns represents a fortune. In

far cheaper than in any other country, one of these great floating naval fortresses runs into a inillion and a half sterling by the time it is ready for sa. In other countries the outlay is far higher, and consequently, the poorer nations are dropping out of the race for sea power. This point is well i'nstrated in Mr. F. T. TONKIN HONGAY COAL BRIQUETTES.

One of the important products of the Societé Franchise des Charbonnages du Tonkin is known by the name of "Briquettes of Hongay! The port of Bongay is situated in the Bay of Along, now brought into prominence by the stranding of the French cruiser Sully on a reel just off the shore. All the mines of the Com. pany, now working are connected by mil with longay port, thus affording cheap, and quick shipment of the briquettes which should find a ready sale in Hongkong. They practically give no smoke, and burn well, not only in Belleville, Neclausse and other water tube bol lers, but also in boilers with sminke tubes,
