sentence Advanced against Tmové; defeated, captured, hanged him. Johnstone. This matter-of-fact announcement recalls the business-like brevity of Captain G. Walton. when he was successful over a Spanish- Aeet comprising three line-of-battle ships, five frigates, three bomb vessels, and a storeship ¡n 1718. - Writing to Sir George Dyng, who had sent him with six vessels, to cut off the Spaniards, he said: "Sir, I have taken and burned as per margin, going for Syracuse, and nm, sir, your obedient servant, G. Walton."

One can almost see Turenne yawning, so graphic is his notification of the condition in which he was left after his victory at Dunkirk. "The enemy came, was beaten, I am tired, good night," wrote he in a despatch that doubtless provoked as much delight as General Sherman's famous Christmas-card despatch to President Lincoln in December, 1864 :-"I beg th present you, as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah, with 150 guns, plenty of ammuni“ tion, 825,000 bales of cotton."

All empló, ments with long hours and ex- posure are liable to cause illness like Mr. Smith's. Rheumatic fever is hardly ever com pletely cured by ordinary medicine. What makes this disease so dangerous is that it im By Balance of last year's account...$ 10,517 95 poverishes and pollutes the blood with the

Dr. Williams' pink pills for pale people owe their extraordinary cures to the fact that they make new blood. Women especially find in this new blond-pure, rich, and regular-a cure for the many pins which they know when to expect; and men find the pills the greatest tonic and strengthening medicine for the nerves and back. FAMOUS DESPATCHES.

Every general at some period of his career is called upon to pen despatches, but it is certainly not given to every officer to compose sentences in these historic documents that will never be forgotten. "Great Eovereign, forgotten!"

These words will not be forgotten. After the

almost supeihuman efforts made by. Stüssel during a siege lasting seventeen days longer than that of Mafeking, more than a hundred days longer than the siege of Paris, more than twice the length of the never-to-be-forgotten siege of Belfort, such an appeal does the man who makes it the highest honour.

Sistel's message will rank in Russian archives with Suwarrow's famous despatch when, his rank being only that of a major, he disobeyed orders in order to inflict a signal defeat on the enemy. "As a soldier," he wrote, "I deserve death for disobeying orders; as a 1318 Rússian, I have done my duty, The enemy is
