They closed in at the straight, and when the stand was passed for the second time Algerine was still setting the pace for the rest tempted to improve near Bowrington but the old favourite did not. answer Gresson's call, and fell off to third and fourth positions when the Rock was passed. Algerine then tried to make his lead good by a good many lengths more, with Aladdin hotly pushing, Rare Role, somewhat late, rushed up, but too 'a'e to make much of n show. Algerine won a splndid race by just half a length, Aladdin a good second and Rare Rose finishing strong third.

In fact, the result of the Garrison Cup B-fore the bunch started. When they even- indicates the hot racing that may be extually did ge: off they were well together in nn pected between two Derby favourites at their meeting for the big event to-morrow afternoon. Cresson and Cumming on Cots. wold and Norman King respectively, kept up a hot pace and it was very evident when the horses got to the straight that they were in for a close race. As they neared the post there was not much doubt that they would trouble the judge, and when the decision of a dead heat for first honours was announced not a few sporting spectators were perplexed concern. ing the outcome of the contest to-morrow. The race was run throughout at a very solid pace, and both horses carrying a good deal of the public's money, were keenly fol- lowed during their journey up from the two mile post and around the oval.

The verdict was popularly received and gave general satisfaction.

The owners agreed to divide the prizes and the dead-

heat was accordingly not run off, It was

Mr. Daxey declared his best to win. This race was absorbingly interesting from start to finish, the run in the pari-mutuel being on Norman King and Cotswold respectively, with one of the Roses for a place. The start was a splendid one, the favourites keeping to- rther well behind. Esquimalt fed with In vincibla Rose and Saxon King third when they passed the Stand. Norman King and Cots wold still watching each other allowed the lead- ers to do the pacing, but they tried conclusions as soon as the back stretch up the hill was reach- ed and made the pace a hot one past the Rock. Norman King rapidly made up his distance from the second pony, which he soon overlook, and Greason closely followedathisheels. The ponies were now going at a flying pace, Norman King and John Peel's crack drawing together rush- ed into premier position, with Invincible Rose third. A splendid race home between the leaders. The spectators could hardly tell which was the better of the two as they passed home nose to nose. Te verdict, when nnnounced, was received with applause. In- vincible Rose was third, and Esquimalt last.

Ardpatrick started the favourite and justified bis admirers. On the rails he took a two- lengths' lead at the start with Scottish King second and La France Rose a long way be hind. In the next furlong La France Rose, by an effort, got into leading position, and when the Rock was reached the ponies closed in. Ardpatrick was hard beld all the while, Gresson being pumistakably sure of his splendid mount. La France Rose led into the home straight in the first round, Ardpatrick

Beancake third. being second and France and Ardpatrick raced neck and neck, and on passing the Post the latter had a slight advantage. They raced in pairs all the way to Bowrington; Rose and Aripatrick, King and Beancake. The latter then pushed ahead at the Football Club's stand. There advantage was not of long duration, for negotia- ling the limb they fell off Scottish King was now whipped and he raced for all he was worth.. Giessen, recognising the silun- tion, just gave his pony slight rein and was res- ponded to in grand style. Ardpatrick simply went ahead as he liked, and won the race hands down by a length and a half. Scottish King was second and leancake third. Mr. Gresson's' was another popular win for Ewo's,

TRAMWAY SERVICE.

A COMPLAINT.

Considerable indignation was aroused at the Survice of Car No. 26 on the journey kame, after the races to-day when a European inspec tur, superintending the traffic, ejected two of ite members of the Chinese community holding high responsible positions in the Colony. These gentleinen had paid their fare and were on the point of receiving their respective tickets, when they were summarily ejected n the ground that the car was for the exclusive use of Europeans. We can discover an section in the Tramway Ordinance conferrin the arbitrary power to the inspector who ap peared to have acted ultra vires. That the re currence of such a high-handed action towards Chinese gentlemen well-known and greatly respected in the Colony might be avoided we would call the attention of the General Manager, by whom adequate instructions should be issued to his subordinates. We believe that the Pari-mutuel, 1st $1.50; 2nd $8.50; 3rd $23 50. matter will not be allowed to remain where it
