HONGKONG, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1905. IALAND WATERS, NAVIGATION.

It has long been recognised that the water ways of China are among the finest in the Per dez.. world, and when in 1898 the Imperial Gov ernment opened the navigable inland waters of the Empire to commerce by all steam hvessels, whether native or foreign, it was considered that an important step had been taken towards developing the trade of the country. The officials having charge of the commercial affairs of the Empire realise the extent to which foreign. nations are benefit- ting by this decision of the govern ment and have recently approached the Throne with a view to recommending the encouragement and protection of such navigation to be carried out by the Chinese. It is thought that by these means localities will be developed and the right of navigation

TAKU TUG AND LIGHTER CO.

The China Times of the 8th ist, says A strongly satisfactory impression has been in-made by the announcement that the directors of the Taku Tug and Lighter Company, Ltd., will recommend a dividend for the half-year of 34 per ceat,, subject to audit, making a total of 6 per cent, for the year. The impression is confirmed by the further information that no less than $10,coo is being set aside for depre- ciation, or $9,000 more than last year, this being in accordance with the sound policy of the company in past years, of making ample allowance in this direction. Further, it is re- commended that a sum of $40,000 be allotted to equalisation of dividends, and there remains a very good balance to be carried forward. The Company during the year has also paid off Tls. 100,000 of debentures, to the amount of Tis, 55,000. These results point to sound adminis-, tration and careful management, and fully bear out the opinion to which we gave expression at the last annual meeting, that the company had succeeded in turning a difficult corner, notwithstanding the adverse circumstance of fluctuations in trade and the altered conditions
