It was in the midst of such dangers and difficulties that Fr. Louis exerted for twenty-one years his apostolic ministry all of which was done while his health was far from being good, as he suffered frequently from fover, brought on most probably by exposure. In the be- ginning of 1892, the Very Rev. Fr. Burghinali, died, Fr. Louis was appointed Pro-Vicar Apostolic by Mon. Raimondi. During the three years that he was Pro-Vicar Apostolic he continued the

The mency has so far not beeh received, but it is understood that the police have an idea where it is. SILVER went up 3/16d. per oz. to-day and the demand rate en Londen has touched 25. 16 the dollar. It is notorious that prices in nimiost every store in the Colony went up by leaps and bounds when the dollar, in relation 10 the sovereign, depreciated in value. Now that the dollar has a higher sterling value, its purchas: ing power locally is not one inta the greater. Have house owners in Europe, who, through their local agents, put up rentals on the plea of a depreciated dollar, a few years ago, consider. ed the iniquity of their action by maintaining rents at their abnormal rates when now we have a Sto sovereign against the $12 one some time ago?
The necessary preparations having been made, the young pst was sent to Hongkong, where, at that me, a mission was at its be ginning. Much had to be done; it was for all a difficult task, and more so for the young missionary as he was confided with n farge territory. Full of ardour he began at once to study the Chinese language, mastered it in a comparatively short time, and simultaneously commenced his apostolic career which was to be both energetic and perilous though fall of fruit. Truly, the beginning of liis cancer at once showed the strong character of the valiant missionary, who left his country, parents, friends, position, only for the cause of God, and for the salvation of sculs, His life was at that time à wandering one, having no fixed place of abode. Father Louis, as he was generally called, had to begin to open up the field entrusted to him. Living simply as the poorest of the Chinese, the good missionary did not spare himself, but became useful for the welfare of all be instructed the people, gave them coun- sel, helped them, and in hundreds of instances settled disputes to the general satisfaction of all and thus prevented serious clan fights, Christians and non-christians alike were sur- prised to find a man so devoted to every good cause, and the life he led had such good effect on them that, in spite of their carly prejudice against foreigners, they made friends with him and asked to be instructed in the faith. But the triumph is not obtained without fighting, and the history of the Church is a standing monu- tained only at the price of the greatest sacrifices. This had been the case with our late Bishop Many inhabitants of a village, having inter course with the Father, and being pleased with the religion he taught, spontaneously re solved to embrace the faith. Their resolution was not pleasing to their neighbours who in terfered and put every obstacle in the way, even threatening them with death; but God who wanted these chosen souls gave them such strength that notwithstanding these threats, though they were entirely free, they wished to be baptised. Being sufficiently in- structed and after many proofs of constancy them. After baptism the boy converts were would have no more trouble from their neigh bours. But they were deceived; secretly their neighbours were preparing terrible vengeance to satisfy their hatred and decided to kill the Father and Christians alike. Fr. Louis, having knowledge that the converts were in danger of their lives, as a good shepherd, went at once to help them, ready to give his own life to save that of his sheep.

which was his characteristic while he was in the interior of China. He gave a special proof of his real in the year 189; when the plague was visiting the plague patients, either in their houses or at the plague hospital, giving them religious consolation and administering the sacraments. In the same year Mon, Raimondi expired and a few months after Fr. Louis was cl. cted Bishop of Clazomene and Vicar-Apostolic of Hongkong. In his humility he refused, but the orders of his superiors were irrevocable, so he had to give in. On May 19th, 1895, he was consecrated Bishop, and the marks of respect shown him by all that day as well as the high dignity conferred upon him were a fitting reward for his holy life. Though a bishop he continued to discharge the missionary duties,
