THE PILOT SERVICE.
Among a number of important measures passed by the Legislature last year with a view to foster shipping interests in Hong kong, the Ordinancu designed with the object of exercising certain control over the so-called pilots of that day seems to have given rise of late to a considerable amounting order early in January. of adverse criticism. it was framed for the purpose, principally, of establishing a properly constituted pilot service, but according to many shipmasters arriving in this port that object is far from being attained.
DAKER, in West Africa, near which Admiral Rojestvensky's ships are now acchored, is to be connected with France by a direct cable. The connecting point on the French side will be Brest. The first section of the cable was taken out in July, another left France in August, and the third, and last but one, left Calais recently, it is hoped that the cable will be in full work
