which the expropriation is to be arranged. The meeting, of course, was strictly private, and inquiries made at the headquarters office the next morning elicited only the fact that there was no information which the directors were then desirous of communicating to the Frou
on this matter.
The expropriation of the Dock formed the one subject of discussion in Singapore after its announcement and all its aspects and possibilities were eagerly debated. Naturally the news has created the most lively interest among the Dock Company's employees who are all burning to hear how the change is likely to affect them. No information on this subject either is vouchsafed by any of the directors; but in well-informed quarters there is a general feeling that there will be no radical change made, at least for the present, in the organise tion, and indeed that it will be several years before any visible alterations will be effected in the personel of the staff, if they ever do
come..
Bhareholders, too, are anxious to discover definitely where they stand. In all probability their position will be a very favourable one when the purchase price has been arranged, and those who sold at the time of the recent decline are very sorry now that they did not sit tight. Among other interests affected by the transaction are certain property owners who were negotiating for sales of land, etc to the Dock Company: where before they had a private concern to deal with they will now have to come to terms with a party that has power to acquire whatever property it wants, at a valuation.
Apropos of the foregoing, we are informed
|
matter how badly they need it. Yet cod liver ail is one of theľmost"¦valuable drugs in the
world, and it is the greatest pity that we have
not thus far been able to free it from those
peculiarities which so seriously interfere with its usefulness."This was written years ago) the work of civilizing and redeeming it how. ever has since been triumphantly accom plished; and as a''leading ingredient in the remedy called
extracted from thelfish this oil is so offensive on with them three or four weeks, and was
to the taste and smell that almost everybody cured. The weakness in my back disappeared abbors it, and many cannot use it, at all, ad and I could bead up and down without pain, My cough coasad and my appetite returned."
Captain Atherton added that since his illness he had found the pills a splendid tonic. Cap. tain Atherton's breakdown was serious. The lambago and stiffness probably indicated kid ney disease, and his lost appetite showed that his digestion had failed, Tr. Williams' pink pills cured him because they gave him new blood. Dr. Williams pink pills are the tonic that tones. The manufacturers can refer to persons in all parts who recommend them, not only as a tonic, but also for paralysis, locomo- for ataxy, rheumatism, sciatica, and kidney disease; diseases arising from impoverishment of the blood, scrofala, rickets, consumption, anemia, loss of appetite, palpitations, neurat: gia, ladies' weaknesses, and bysterin. These pils are not a purgative. They are sold at medicine shops, and by Dr. Willams' medi- che co., Holborn Viaduct, London, England, at two shillings and ninepence per bottle, or six battles for thirteen and nine,

Commenting on the subject the Straits -Times says:-
No authoritative news beating upon the expropriation of the Tanjong Pagar Dock Com pany's property by the Goverment was vouch safed to day by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the passing corporation. A meet;
ing of the Board was bold yesterday, but on application this morning at the Company's
office, our reporter was informed that there was no statement to be made. This, in the circum stances, is to be regretted ; because the public are rightly interested in the trend of events | concerning the transfer of the vast property from private to Government control. Another matter for regret in the premises is the now seemingly assured fact that the projected ex- proprintion of the Docks was permitted to leak out among a certain select few at home, before it was announced definitely and publicly. This gave an unfair advantage to certain holders | of stock and other speculators "in the know." At any rate it is known that one local firm at all events-one with excep tional sources of information, and accord ing to instructions wired from home-secured large blocks of stock within the last fortnight
[1392 and therefore it is to be inferred that there was some leakage at the Colonial Office or else where. However that may be, the shareholders who parted with their stock within the past fortnight now bitterly bewail their ill fortune, because the shares have risen from $233 to $300 within that period. Some local shareholders principally Chinese-are 10-day under the impression that Government intends to pay at least $600 per share for the stock, and they art therefore revailing in ecetasies of delicious and cipation. It is to be feared that their castles in Spain will only prove half as tall as they have built them in their imaginations. What ever may be the price paid, and the date of the transfer, the immediate result of the ule will
