LONATICS AT THE FRONT.
The Bossian newspapers have published -numerous painful stories of lunacy and mania at the front. The Sibirsky Viesinik prints the following picture of a soldier driven mad by

THE FISH THEORY OF
LEPROSY.
:
The current issue of the Journal of State Medicine the official organ of the Royal In. stitute of Public Health, publishes a lengthy letter from Mr. W. P. Rodrigo, D. P. A., (Camb.) strongly combatting Mr.Jonathan-Mutchine son's fish theory of leprosy. Mr. Rodrigo goes in to the subject very fully and declares that barring a very small minority, the profession bas not accepted the fish hypothesis nor the non-contagiousness of the disease. Although admitting that theres some connection be- tween leprosy and fish Mr. Rodrigo does not for one moment believe that" in all ages and in all countries leprosy has been and still is duc in the main to the consumption as food of decomposing or imperfectly cured fish." Amongst the arguments advanced to shatter that theory is this: that in Ceylon, even amongst the poorest, there is a greater loathing for de- composing meat (flesh or fish) than in England, and no one eats any fish or flesh that is not thoroughly cooked, and yet leprosy is common. Mr. Rodrigo's, belief on the other hand is that leprosy is a disease inoculated into human be ings essentially through the skin.. He claims that this can be satisfactorily proved if any one interested in the subject goes carefully into the early histories of the cases. The suggestion that the disease is much more common amongst males than females goes a long way to prove this statement. Mr. Rodrigo sums up his views of leprosy as follows: (1.) Leprosy is a bacillary disease produced by the Bacillus leprae of Bansen, (2.) The bacillus has a telluric exis- tence outside the human body, mnch like the bacillus of tetanus, and has a predilection for Wuchow, December 18th. a fishclogged soil. (3.) It is introduced into That the unexpected is always happening the human system by inoculation and not by was exemplified the other day when H. K.. ingestion. (4.). It may be possible to cultivate the general report has not succeeded in doing very organism apurobically in a medium containing much. In this connection it will be interesting to learn that the brigands who held up the steam launch Wingfal, almost under the very noses of the Customs authorities, are still in gaol, the officials being confident that they cap persuade them to divulge the names of their accomplices together with the location of the hidden treasure. With this object in view the prisoners have already had their nails torn from their fingers and toes, But so far they appear to be determined not to speak in spite of the torture to which thoy are subjected.
