VICTORIA REGATTA.

FIRST DAY.

8th inst.

The forty-seventh 'rowing meeting, in con neution with the Victoria Recreation Club, commenced to-day over the usual, course. Weather of the most ¡lelightful character fay- oured the event, and the large river boal, Kwong Tung, which served as the Club's fing ship, and which was gaily decorated for the occasion, was positively crowded with guests, all of whom were bent on spending a thorough ly enjoyable alternoon. Unfortunately, a great deal of time was lost, at the commencement, the Secretary's launch not leaving Blake Pier until nearly one o'clock, whilst the first race was fixed for half an hour later. On arrival on board the Kwong Time, the guests and a large number of members of the Club, sat down to an excellent luncheon, served in the saloon. The general arrangements, it need scarcely be said, were quite up to the high standard of ex- cellance we are usually led to associate with all functions under the auspices of the Club. To-day, apart from the brief delay, was a happy augury of the complete success of the Regaita, and we have little doubt but that the attendances will be well maintained through, out the wack.

The list of officials was representative to a degree, and was as follows:-

For some time it was difficult to say which had the o advantage, if there was any, but by the watch Hongkong were pulling thirty to the minute to their opponents, thirty six. Passing what, at one time, was the American sailing ship, le J. Ray, the Canton men, assumed a slight lead, which without exertion they increased until they passed the winning post a length and a quarter ahead of the chosen local crew. Three boats turned out for the third event, open to Chinese members of the Harbour Police and the finish was an exciting one, boat No. 1, winning on the post by the narrow official margin of two feet. The cheerful man- ner in which the winners raised their oars per- pendicularly after the gun soyaded caused much 'amusement.

The race for men of war cutters saw four stalwart crews, fourteen oars to each boat, come under the orders of the starter, two being from the Furst Bismarck, one from the geaner and the fourth from the Liguria. The last named were speedily installed favourites after their prowess of yesterday. The rade from start to finish was a hard fought one. The first German boat and the Italian boat were inside, and for the greater part of the journey the Germans held a decisive lead. The Italians in the last quarter of a mile, put in all they knew, and the result of a really magnificient tussle was declared a dead heat.

The British boat was last.

The dead beat was round off, the Germans winning easily by a couple of lengths,

Three crews turned out to compete for the Shamrock-A. V. Barros, bow: J. P. Jordan, Hongkong Club Cup, but the race was of the 7 A. Loureiro, 3; A. E. Alves, stroke; Č. M.S.runaway ding-dong order. Musso's boat Korn Alves, cox.

The race forthe International Challenge Cup, although only two crews competed, English and Germans, caused some little excitement. The Germans had the advantage in weight, their crew scaling three stone and pine pounds more than the English crow. Both boats gat away on even terms, and after going some little distance the English crew led for a short time gaining a lead of nearly a third of a length. After this the Germans reversed the positions, for after drawing level they passed their op ponents and maintained a short lead. Both

Kornblume crews were pulling hard, but it was evident that the Germans were taking matters prettyThistio...........

caimly. After covering two-thirds of the course, the English boat go well ahead and increased the advantage to nearly a length up to about two hundred and fifty yards from the winning past, when the Germans put on a vicious spurt, and pulling at least seven to their opponent's five, won a very hard fought race by a quarter of a length.

1

The first race after being postponed for a time had to be abandoned on account of lack of entries. The Parsee Cup brought out the whole of the entrants. A wretched start marked the event, but shortly afterwards "Rose" and "Thistle got together and rowed neck and neck for quite balf a mile. Then the "Rose" crew made a hot spurt and, overhaul ng "Thistle," the crew of which was pulling very short, won with the greatest of ease by four lengths. "Kornblume" and Shamrock" gave up hopelessly beaten. Then came the race for the Chinese members of the Harbour Police, who rowed in service boats, All the men pulled well and willingly, but utterly without style.

་་

At half past three, H. E. the Governor, (Sir Matthew Nathan, R.E, K.C.M.O.) and quite arrived, the attendance by this time having increased considerably.

The race for men-of-wars' gigs and whalers was interesting from the fact that the famous rowing crew of the Italian warship Liguria, had entered. This crew holds an unbeaten record in these waters, and has defeated time and again both American and British crews on this station, and especially on the North China-coast. The event saw four British boats opposed to the cracks. From the start to the finish, the Italians held the lead, and coming away all alone won by about a quarter of mile amid hearty chears, Fiser oarsmen it would be difficult to find the world over. They main tained the most perfect stroke, A whaler of the Vengeance got second prize,

The tab calling proved an easy thing for J. M. Roza Pereira, his only competitor, Cruickshank, breaking a rollock early in the race. The Chairman's Challenge Cup brought out three crews and a very nice race was the result, though the Kornblume in the and won rather easily. The last race for the Lusitano Cup was interesting from start to fish. The Rose made the pace from a good position on the inside, with the Thistle and Leek together in the centre, and Kornblume well out of it. Rose maintained her advantage for the major part of the distance, but was challenged by Thistle, the crew of which put on a good spurt and won a fine race by three length.

The Sailing Races commenced about two and concluded about Ava. The pick of the yachts in Hongkong took part and the racing was most enjoyable, particularly for those on yachts.

One bright summer morning, I called at the Magistracy, a place which once held for me all the terrors pertaining to the unknown, and stated my case. Was I homeless Alas, yes. Did I want to enter the House of Detention There was no other hope for it.

"Oh, that's all that right", said a bluff in- spector, with a heartiness which I have often wondered at. "You'll just go in, get your chow, and you're out all day from 8 to 45 long as you come in at 4 and don't stay out when you haven't bed, you'll find it all right. TURE TOPICS.

* With the advent of the racing reason I am called upon to again make my how to your readers, end in so doing express a hope that the forthcoming meeting will be as successful and enjoyable as its many predecessors. There are still some two months to elapse before the Actual races are due, but the time should be pleasantly passed by early riders who know the many benefits to be derived, from by a walk to the rails ore the dewis off the grass. My bud- get of news for this morning is somewhat short, but it includes at least one Important jiem-the and Little Momo--which, of course, overe running off of the tie between Desart King

shadows everything else for importance. But of this more anon. The gathering at the course today angurs well for the success of the many other preliminary meets before the races. The spirit imparted into the sport by the active participation of our Governor.is bound to popularise racing in Hongkong to an extent not hitherto known, and with such a keen sportsman as the Hon. W. I. Cresson at the head of the Ewo stable we should sea the... revival of enthusiasm on the local turf by the representatives of the familiar "blue and. silver."

The moming opened bright, and drew quite a large gathering of sports to the Course, while, the number of ladies present was well up to the average for so early in the season. The griffins went for a few spins, and the best times made were as follows OS

Almined procmelter the tie between Defert King and Little Momo was run off, the former being pllated by the Hon, W. J. Gresson and the latter by its owner, Mr. G. K. Hall Brutton; Desert King, however, won by two lengths in 2ms. 25 3/5 secs, and thus decided the record of three dead heats in the annals of China racing..

MAT. EARLY BIRD.

This mording, as usual on Saturdays, quite a crowd of sporting folk put in an appearance at the rails. The long expected match between- Ders King and Little Momo was somewhat of a fiasco.
