HONGKONG METEOROLOGICAL

· SIGNALS.

A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory, a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day: They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces sarily imply that bad weather is expected.. The. signals are as follows:-

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony,

A cone point upwards and drum below in- dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the Colony.

A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony..

Two lanterns hoisted vertically indicate bad weather in the Colony and that the wind is expected to veer.

Two lanterns hoisted horizontally indicate bad weather in the Colony and that the wind is expected to back.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Harbour Office and on M's Receiving Ship.

LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gus placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gate of wind is expected to blow here.

It contains observations made al Hongkong and at a number of stations in the Far East, together with Remarks, Weather, forecasts, and information regarding the exiri | ‚ence and movements of typhoons based thereon.
