The work was inaugurated by the sailing of the s... Tweeddale, on the 2gth of that month from Hongkong to Durban direct, with 1,954 coolies. Only one casualty has occurred to the steamers, that of the stranding of the Swanley on Serain Island, one of the Nathusas group, while among the coolies only three deaths have been reported-one from beri beri and two from dropsy. Chinese arriving on 6th inst, from Delay state that the Japanese are sending a number of heavy guns over the railway communicating with the castern flank of the besieging forces before Port Arthur They do not give a very definite description of the guns, but say that they are so large that two men's outstretched arms can barely span them. This would indicate that siege anillory is being taken to positions in the Takushan district. It would be reason able to believe that if any attempt is made to plant siege guns, it will be at this point, for the reasons that at this point in the line of attack the Japanese have experienced, whatever success they may have attained before For Arthur, and that guns will be easier of trans port to that pince, it being the nearest to Dalny, practically the only port where guns can be landed for this purpose. The Chefor Dully News says that four of these guns are Cranley said to have recently gone forward.

“SIS: PAUL BRAUN AND -- CHAREBS HARDOUIN

It will be remembered by our readers that, time ago, on account of certain disagree. monts, regarding price and specifications, of these two steamers, the localagents, Melars, Trevoux & Co. put the business in liquidation,

the us. Paul Reau and Charles Hard which had been running, for six months be ween Hongkong and Canton, were laid up at the latter part, the run being suspended. A representative of the builders in France, has recently arrived in the Colony with the object of investigating the differences between the Company and the builders, with a view to settling the same if possible, and releasing the steamers from their present enforced idleness, and letting them resume their run. Failing this the steamers will be offered for sale, and it is understood that, in the latter event, a pur- chaser has been found ready to start a new company. The builders' representative and || the company have already been approached by an American broker, who has the interests of the would-be purchaser in hand, with the object of learning their views, and possibly of forming a company, or reorganizing the old one for the continuance of the business. The upset price for the sale of the steamers is said to be 1,500,000 francs, and several intending buyers are investigating the chances of business to be

verdict of wilful murder against one or more French sailors unknown. A correspondest of the N. C. D. Nawr says that, while there were natives who saw the brutal and dastardly deed the men who did it being dark there was diffi- culty in the identification of individuals.

At the funeral of the murdered man there was a large gathering of his comrades from both H.M. ships Bramble and Fearless, as well as representatives of the French and German men-of-war in port. The British, Freuch, and German Consuls, the Commissioner of Customs, and several other residents were present.

There is no doubt that the French naval

authorities will cause a searching inquiry to be made with a view of finding out who is guilty

of this terrible crime, and when the murderers

have been discovered they will see, that justice

is done.

A Chinchow letter dated the rst instant, and quoted by the same journal, says that between the city of Mukden and the Caiuliuho the Russian encampments in tents are abundantly visible. THE LICHUAN MURDERERS. Writing from Ichang on 29th uft, the cor-Siawanpao`. respondent of the N, C. D. Newr says that the bodies of the murdered bishop and priests have now reached the river side opposite Ichang city, and all the native officials have crossed over to pay them the prescribed rites. Two of the murderers have been brought in and have since been executed, the death penally unfor- tunately being very barbarously inflicted, one poor creature being slashed about the head some six times before succumbing. This does not seem to have been done purposely, but the executioner in charge at the time was a mere tyro, this being his first public appearance. Ichang has no regular executioner, but a soldier is selected from one of the camps to act in that capacity. He receives about a dollar and a-half for each man beheaded, and it is the custom to spend the half-dollar to bura cash paper for the soul of the slain man, and the remainder is immediately spent in a feast for the executioner and his companions, as it would be unlucky to keep such money about one, for it is the price of blond.

LOST IN THE RED SEA.

ATRAGIC STORY.

A dramatic story of shipwreck on a desolate island is told, in a cable message from Suez, On Saturday, August 27, the steamer Prome arrived at that port with eight survivors from the Baron Innerdale. These men were picked up on a lonely reef near the Kuria Murin Islands, The story told by the survivors points to a tragic sequel, which the sea may never tell. Only two miles from the port of Aden, the Kuria Muria Islands are situated near an unfrequented part of the Arabian coast. They are out of the usual track of shipping, and use ful only as the landing point of the Red Sea cable. The hopeless position of the shipwrecked cław, stranded on a reef in this foresaken spot, was apparent to their captain from the fist. He therefore determined to take thotwa ship's boats, and as many of his men as they would hold, and make to the nearest port on the mainlaud, An August 6 this plan was put into execution. Leaving the eight men who have been saved

with an ample store of food and water, the captain bravely went off in search of assis tance in his two little cockleshells, › More
