Miss Corelli was asked what method she employed in producing her-work.

THE SOUL'S IMMORTALITY.

"The subject of the soul's immortality has long settled itself in my mind. I cannot say believe it-i know it. Death to me is nothing, I do not even admit it. The fact that I am is sufficient proof for me that I always was and always shall be. Even here and now we can begin-we, can begin-immortal life. Our duty here is to place ourselves, as Trine says, in tune with the Infinite.

*It arose out of a mere sentimental' asso- ciation, My stepfather, Dr. Mackay, had always promised to take me to Shakespeare's town, but his death occurred before we did the promised pilgrimage. He died in 1890. I visited Stratford then, while mourning for his loss-and wished even at that time to live there. I had only written four books then.universe. But circumstances rendered this impossible.

THE SHAKESPEAREAN FIGHT.

"After my serious illness in 1897, and my slow recovery during 1898, I again thought of

the old town, and came back to it. I loved it very much-1 love it still, though there are a section of persons connected with the Share- speare Birthplace Trust who have done their level best to make me hate it. But they have not succeeded. And they have injured them.

"I even go so far as to believe that people could keep themselves in perfect bodily health by following out the diclates of such influences as they bring them into accord with the

"Death is a mere putting off of one garment to put on another. Whether the garment taken up after death be a better or worse one than that worn here depends entirely upon how the present life is spent.

arising from the many ailments and diseases which are familiar to mankind; like a vast cloud it hangs over a multitude na one

cure. Remedies like

WAMPOLE'S PREPARATION have not attained their high position in the confidence of the people by bald assertions. and boasting advertisements. They are obliged to win it by doing actually what is claimed for them. That this remedy deserves its reputation is conceded. It is palatable as honey and contains the nutritive and curative properties of Pure Cod Liver Oil, combined with the Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites and the Extracts of Malt and Wild Cherry. Nothing has such a record of success in Scrofulu, Anemia, Throat and Lung Troubles, and emaciating complaints and disorders, that tend to undermine the foundations of strength and vigour. Its use helps to show life's brighter side. Dr. H. L. Reddy, B. A., M. D., L. R. C. S., Edinburg,-L. R. C. P., London,~Physician Woman's Hospital-Professur University of Bishops College, Canada, says: "1 have much pleasure in stating that I have used it in cases of debility and have found it to be a very valuable remedy as well as pleasing to take." You can take it with the assurance of getting well. It never disappoints. chemists. 78+]

Altogether, Miss Corelli's lines have fallen in pleasant places. Though she has had one or two great sorrows in her life which have left their mark, she is uniformly cheerful. She is still in the thirties, is full of energy, and enjoys enormous contemporary fame.-x.

Mr. Lee helped very much to spread the libellous assertions of his friend, Mr. Flower, against me," replied the novelist quietly

and he had no excuse for doing so, as I wrote him a friendly and courteous letter, telling him that the story of my wish to purchase land in Healey street was not true, and asking him as a scholar and gentleman, not to credit such rumour. He never answered the letter, but he continued to spread the calumny in a circular letter about Henley street to the English and American press."

SUFFERED SHAKESPEARE,

The Queen Dowager of Italy possesses one of the finest collections of pearls in the world, which, it is said, are destined for her eldest granddaughter, the Princess Yolande of Italy. The majority of them were given to her majesty by her husband and son on her successive

birthdays,

The largest collection of crown jewels in the world is that possessed by the imparial house of Russia, and each year priceless works of art and stones of enormous value are added to the collection. From time immemorial the princes under the dominion of Russia have brought gorgeous gifts to the Czar, and from the East have come wonderful jewels, which have accumulated year by year.

There are certain jewels which can be worn only by the reigning Empress. A shawl of beautiful filigree work in gold, which is a mass of diamonds, bas never been worn by the pre- sent Empress. The pearls in the collection are of every shade. Beautiful strings of pink purple pearls are there, and marvellous uncut emeralds from Siberia-Washington Star.
