WE (Shanghai Mercury) hear on very good authority that the Ping fleet, beinnging to the C. E. and M. Company are all going to be sold. The Fuping has been sold to a German firm' in Tientsin, and the Peiping to Mr. Verner of these boats which are so suited for the northern the same port. It seems rather strange to sell trade; most of them being able to carry 1,000

IT will be interesting to old-time seafaring med in the China coast to learn that the Ballfe, the largest steamship afloat, is commanded by Captain E. J. Smith, who was a chief officer of the Occidental and Oriental liners running out of San Francisco some years ago. Her chief engineer also is J. The Baltic is the largest steamer in existence, having a length of 725 feet 9 inches, with a breadth of 75 feet and depth of 49 feet. Her gross tonnage is 24,000, and her cargo capacity 28,000 tons.
