First reading of a Bill entitled The Chinese
of the Golden Hilt fort makes us feel that it is the centre of the naturally defended fortifica- tions and one of the finest scenes possible to look upon, a picture hanging on the sphere, Just opposite the Golden Hill Fort there sa Marconi system of wireless tele graphy, near the entrance to the harbour.
The entrance to the harbour, dues not show
visible clearly but we were able to see the
masts of the Russian warships in the western basin. The water seems to touch heaven be- yond the Tiger Tail peninsula.. We saw two or three of the Russian guoloats and torpedo
boats lying about one mile outside the harbour under the cover of the Golden Hill Fost but whenever they observe our fleet they hide on the left hand side of the entrance of the har bour where they could be seco by us.
The Golden Wilt Fort is a fort for the de-
fence of the sea side of Port Arthur but in front of the Golden Hill on the east there is a high peale in the shape of a saw which we called Gizazizu (Zig-zag) Mountain. We could not see any fort or redoubt there but on the middle of the peak there seems to be a level space, and we often see carriages and men on horseback. Laolitsui Fort is also in front of it and serves as a land defence with good effect. Between Tung Chikwanshan Fort and Laoliisui Fort there is a fort called Pa Yin-shan (White Silver

CHINAMAN KILLED,
When the s.8. From the report made by the captain it was then learned that, the day before she arrived in this harbour, a quarrel broke out between some of the Chin ese passengers and the Chinese crew of the vessel over the cooking of their food, and a free fight ensued.

ROGERS 2, WILKES.—*
The third bout, between Rogers and Wilkes, was full of interest, and although the former had the slight advantage of reach he met with a stubborn defence and continually countered, the judges having to be unusually smart in re- cording points. Several of the blows delivered should have speedily finished the bout had they been sent home with sufficient force. Rodgers led and Wilkes clinched at close quar- ters, but breaking clear they continued fighting hard until the call of time. In the second' ea. counter Wilkes 'bucked-up, and led with the right. In fact, both men, at this stage of the contest, appeared to have lost sight of the fact that Nature had provided them left hand which could be put to good account in the exercise of the noble art.'
