Looking at the balance sheet there is nothing which calls for special comment apart from the ordinary fluctuations to be expected in dealing with such large totals, but as customary I will briefly compare some of the items with the figures in last report. Current accounts and F/deposits in gold show a slight falling off, while in-silver accounts there is a small increase. Bill payable are down (in round figures) $5,000,000. As usual our note circulation is lower than in the December half year, but is $1,775,194 over the corresponding period last year. On the other side cash is $4,000,000 higher, and bullion in band and in transit is less by $3,300,000, Sterling reserve land serurities remain unchanged, but consols, co- lonal and other securities are reduced $2,000,000, while our boldings of Indian Govern- ment rupee paper are practically the same. Bills discounted, loans and Credits stand at
$87,140,299 84 against $89,997,177.72, and bills receivable at $99,853.913.49, against $101,142, 8.903. I am glad to say that our branches all round have been able to show profitable re sults for the period under review. In China,

THE BRITISH IN THE EAST.
"A RACK OF STONE AND IRON,”
Signor Bergeret, the special travelling cor respondent of the Matino, Naples, has been much impressed with the wonderfully adaptive qualities of the British. Writing from Colombo

"Only the English, the race of stone and iron, are able, in the midst of this high-pressure work of nature, to continue their physical and mental activity, and the over-feeding which has procured for them the name of the 'people of the five meals: They demand that in the Colonies every Briton shall be twice British.
