A FAIR FX?”ANGE. Large sums of money are no doubt realized from simple speculation, but the great fortunes are derived from legitimate and honest business where the goods furnished are worth the price they bring.. Certain famous business men have necmainted their millions wholly in this way, Prompt and faithful in every con- tract or engagement they enjoy the confidence of the pablic and command a class of trade that is refused to unstable ar tricky competitors. In the long run it does not pay to cheat or deceive others. Even a child or a dog soon learns to distinguish between real friends and foes in disguise. A humbug may be advertised with a noise like the bi-wing of a thousand trumpets, but it is soon detected and exposed. The manufacturers of

AN ECCENTRIC GENIUS.

SOME NET WHISTLER TALES,

Mr. Mortimer Menpes, the well-known artist, has recently published a book entitled Whistler as I know him." The following interesting review of this work has been con tributed to the London Daily Express by it. Raymond Blathwayt:-

1 goes without saying that the book is full of good things. Mr. Menpes knew Whistler in his very best periods. No one ever knew him quite as he did, and certainly no one ever so intelligently appreciated his subtle and delicate methods of work. The book therefore is written from the expert point of view, and can so be judged.

What is most striking in Mr. Yepes' book, perhaps, is its frankness. With bina Whistler

man would come in just as Whistler bad begun a picture. "Oh, that is superb," he would cry, that is amazing, Jimmy, don't touch that picture again." And Whistler would answer, “Well, I guess it's rather good," and leave it without another stroke."

"A picture," continues Mr. Menpes," has

often been thus arrested by a so-called friend with a frivolous, ignorant remark of this kind. For Whistler was very sympathetic by nature, and, was influenced in a great extent by what people said."

Afterwards he would turn to me and say, You know that does a lot of good; it's like the important bank-manager who visits each de partment every morning and coughs loudly to show his nuthority.""

Sometimes we visited a dealer who owed him money, and Whistler would receive a cheque. Once the cheque was not banded to him in what he thought a sufficiently dignified

If they might scientifically analyse the experiences of a Colonial Governer, what might they not find? |(Laughter.)
