STRIKE AT CANTON,
SHIPPING SUSPENDED.
RICESHOPS CLOSED.
CARTON, 4th August, 10.45 am:
The steamiers Honum, Tai On, Kwangtung, Yögking and Sainam arrived here this morning, but in consequence of all the cargo-boats having struck, it is impossible for them to discharge their cargoes with the result that shipping is at a standstill.
In this connection our Canton correspond- ent writing on Wednesday informed us that, for some time past, trou le has been brewing bet- ween the cargo-boat people and the tax colec tors at that part. It seems that the authorities have revised the tax on cargo boats, which previously was at the rate of 10 cents per cheung equal to about to ft. Chinese measure- ment, but now they wish to charge by English measurement, which means the boat people will have to pay on a more per cheung. This they are resenting and have congregated at the entrance of Fati Creek and are prepared to give armed resistance.

A Chinese junk which left Yantouwan at 3 pm, on the 26th has arrived here, and reports that from the previous midnight firing was heard, lasting for some hours. It was believed that the Japanese fleet was engaging the forts
on Golden Hill.
At about 4 a m. on the 26th the firing was suspended for an hour, and until the junk got close to Chefan heavy cannonading was heard
without interruption.
At daylight on Wednesday, the 27th, eight large Japanese men-of-war, and a number of Torpedo-boats and destroyers were sighted, and same firing was heard, in the far distance.

criticisms, as far as the Dock Co. is concerned, would have been transferred to the meeting of the shareholders held on the 19th ult, and have been somewhat disappointed in noticing that nothing whatever occurred on that occa- sino, I think it but right to call attention to a real grievance which has caused considerable loss to investors:
a
manner. Messrs. Butterfied & Swire will have
large deals of their own in Hangkon within two years. The tierman government will have' their own flauting dock in Tsingtau within the present year capable of docking their large men of war out here, and it would not be sur prising if a goodly number of Teutonic mer. chant steamers will also avail themselves of this dock. These facts are presumably known by the directors of Farnham, Boyd & Co, and I fail to see how they can view the future in such a roscate light. I refrain from going into all details of the accounts, for they speak quite sufficiently for themselves.
My grievance is this: Why do we always get such reassuring statements from the directors, such stereotyped remarks year by year, al- though the position of the company would war rant a fuller and wider review of its affairs.
[Why did not our correspondent get up and tell all these awkward truths at the meeting? Shareholers in Shanghai always seem to us to be very like a flock of sheep, great fellows at "erousing" and growling till it comes to stand- ing up and calling to account in public those whom they condemn and criticise in private.— ED., C.G.]
