SIGNALS.

A NEW CODE,

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day, They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces- sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:-

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony,

A cone point upwards and drum below in-

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Barbour Office and on M's Receiving Ship.

LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching 1950 typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gale of wind is expected to blow here.
