HONGKONG METEOROLOGICAL

SIGNALS,

A NEW CODE,

We have received from the longkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as sthose at present in use at Shanghai, and will ba hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at

Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces. sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:-

The above signals will, as heretofore, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such posi. tions or are moving in such directions that in. formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav ing the barbour.

NIGHT SIGNALA

Two lanterns haiste vertically indicate bad weather in the Colony and that the wind is

expected to veer.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Harbour Office and on H M's Receiving Ship.

LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gate of wind is expected to blow here.

SPECIAL INQUIRIES.

Masters of vessels or their agents may, whenever necessary, call at the Telegraph Company's Office in Connaught Read and send telegrams to the Observatory asking for special information without charge. Such loquiries may also be sent from the Police Station at Kowloon Point which is connected with the Observatory by telephone.

Further information concerning the weather to be expected while signals are hoisted, and sailing directions, are given in "The Law of Borms in the Eastern Seas."
