ROUND THE WORLD IN A CANOE.
A CANADIAN'S ADVENTUROUS VOYAGE TO LONDON, When Captain Slocum, in his American 13- ton boat, made a voyage round the world, his daring deed was thrown in the face of the Canadian public, and, as a result, Captain Voss, a bold and capable Canadian seaman, andet took to outdo the Amer can's exploits. In the Tilikums he determined to sail round the globe with the object of attaining a warld's record and also to demonstrate the utility of an im proved sea and surf anchor he had invented

A FIGHT FOR LIFE,

A correspondent of the Paredzu, on the way 10 the front, passed through Matsuyama on the 18th ult. I cannot describe all the wonderful things I saw, but I found that guns, torpedoes, shells and all the other things of destruction were being made by hundreds. entering into the contract for sending the money was the head office at Hongkong and the branch office here only transmitted the money. Even if it were allowed that the branch office bad any responsibility in the matter, the branch office would not be liable for any France to Indo-China, and even Holland to damage as to the point at dispute according Java. The only consolation is that the cession to one of the conditions of the contract, Ex-nay keep Japan quiet for a number of years."
Counsel also urged that it hibit No. 3a. was not by the defendants' negligence that "a" instead of u" had appeared in the telegram, and that it could not be ascertained, by the word Dhanamal, to whom the money was sent. Counsel asked the Court to call Mr. Ishii, sub-manager of the branch office of the Dai Ichi Ginko at Yokohama, in order to prove that it was the general.custom not to forward money received by wire at a bank till
inquiries were made by the receiver, unless the receiver had frequent transactions with the bank and was familiar with the bank, in which case he would be informed of the arrival of the order.
Mr. Ideura also asked the Court to call Mr. E. Hatoomal as a witness to prove that the plaintiff was to gain a profit of five per cent, from the owner of the goods and of one per cent. from a Japanese merchant.
After deliberation, the Court dismissed the applications of both the parties.
Mr. Ideura said that, though the defendants'
no responsibility, this was not the first time Counsel alleged that the defendant bank had such transactions had taken place. Indeed several transactions were before made between both the parties in the same manner and under the same name without obstacles. It was evident from the above facts that the delay in the advice in question was intentional on the part of the defendants, so that the latter should, of course, be liable to all the damages incurred

The Tilikum sailed from Victoria, British Columbia, on May 21st, 1901, crossed the North and South Pacific Oceans to Sydney, Australia, touching at various cannibal and civilised istands on her way. Fram Sydney she sailed to Melbourne, thence overland to Ballarat and Geelong; from there to Adelaide, Hobart, and through the Hasman Sea, making Invercargill, New Zealand, the most southern city in the world.
Leaving Invercargill she travelled up the eastern coast of the South Island, touching at Dunedin, Oamaru, Himaru, Lyttleton, Christ church, and thence across Cook Straits to Wellington. From there she went to Pal- merston, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Nelson, and Auckland. Then she sailed north through the Hebrides Islands, Coral Sea, Great Barrier Reef, Torres Strail, to Thursday
Island. eaving Thursday Island she passed through the Trafura Sea and Indian Ocean to Durban, Natal. From Durban she grossed overland in Johannesburg and Pretoria, from thence down to East London, and from there oversen to Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, covering a distance oversta of 24,600 miles and overland of 1,70 miles. On the Tilikum's arrival at Pernambuco, South America, a dis. tance of another 3,000 miles, she will have completed the record of the world. And from
this moment a woman appeared on the deck of one of the Russian ships, which I think was the Rurik. She stood against the ship's rail and waved a handkerchief, smiling and chat- ting and looking at the /fitachi going down enveloped in white smoke. She was evidently pleased for her country's sake at the destruc- tion of the steamer. We became furious with indignation, however, at the behaviour of the woman, and thought she would repeat her be haviour when the Saito went down. We all felt very angry and wished we could at least curse her to death with our dying breath if we had died! We were astonished to find
A WOMAN ON BOARD A WAR-SHIP,
On seeing the last of the Hitachi one of the Russian ships steamed round the Sade and discharged a torpedo against the steamer, Soon afterwards all three Russian ships were hidden by a mist from our view. We were in a most trying plight, with little hope of saving our lives. Though unable to row, we felt much relieved when the Russians disappeared. As is reported in the newspapers, it was about to a.m; when we met with the squadron and shortly after i p.m. when the Sade was tor- pedoed.
