CHINESE MARRIAGES.
We must ask the indulgence of our Chinese readers for writing on a subject in which we have only a theoretical interest and which we | are considering simply as observers-namely, the marriage ceremonies of the Chiness. We have no desire to give any advice on the sub- ject, we do not intend to cross swords with any of the disputants who figured so conspi- cuously in the recent debate at Selangor. We may take this opportunity however of congratu⚫ inting them on their wisdom in the choice of the subject. It was well chosen, and being a social question, came well within the range of practical effort and the mere dissemination of sound views on the subject will by itself go very far towards bringing about the desired reform, without necessity of asking or seeking for any violent measures.
Chinese marriage ceremonies seem long and tedious, in which there is a great deal of con- sideration shown to the astrologer or match- maker, and very little is left for the bride or bridegroom. The bride's share in all the func- tions is not by any means to be envied. Until
