was drawn up at the Eastern end of the Canal where the Emperor William surround ed by a brilliant retinue warmly welcomed the King. At a banquet in the evening at Kiel the Emperor referred to the King's en deavours for the preservation of peace and invoked the aid of God to assist his efforts.
However much we may deplore the loss of life, which, has accompanied this double can better spare 20,000 men than a first-class battleship. Loss of men is nothing to a nation of nearly 50 millions, since when men fall others can take their place, and the cry of "another fot Hector" finds a ready and an eager response But the Hatsuse cannot be replaced, and has probably gone down in water too deep to make salvage operations practicable. It may be doubt. The King, replying, said he was deeply touched whether the present situation demanded the ed at the Kaiser's appreciative reference to his unremitting endeavours for the mainten ance of peace, and was happy in the cer tainty that the Kaiser had the same object in view. His Majesty concluded by hoping that the two flags might float side by side to the most remole ages for the maintenance of peace and the welfare of all nations.

An extraordinary general meeting was held at the Cannon-street Hotel, London, on 25th ult, Mr. J. H. Gwyther presiding, to consider
a renewal of the bank's charters, with certain a resolution authorizing the directors to accept modifications, in accordance with the terms of the draft charter submitted to the meeting. The chairman, in moving the resolution, re gretted that the directors had had to call the shareholders together for a purely formal pur- pose, but the law required it. His Majesty in Council had nuthorized the renewal of their charter for ten years, from the end of March, and the directors had taken advantage of the occasion to obtain from the Treasury the in- sertion of two words whereby the operations of the bank would in the future be less hampered. Their original charter stated that the company could only establish agencies and branches eastward of the Cape of Good Hope, but on pointing out to the Treasury that the course of business bád very much changed since those days, they readily fell in with the directors views. The words inserted were "or else. where, which quite sufficiently met their wishes. Mr. E. Levita seconded the motion,
