The husband was triumphant; but his companions, in constemation, could not pronounce one word. All at once, the wife who was about to skim the rice, let fall the ladle which, slipping through the interstices of the bamboo floor, fell to the ground beneath. The woman. Immedi- ately stretching out and lengthening her tongue two metres, used it as an elephant does its trunk to pick up the ladle from the ground. At this spectacle the husband and all his friends took to fight; there was doubt about it; they had to do with ghosts.

The husband did not dare to return that night, and in the morning he went there, accompanied by his friends, but he found the

There, on measuring his nose, he found that it was lengthened out to a fathom. The whale village laughed heartily over his adventure. ORIGIN OF MAN.

Dr. H. Klanisch, a professor of anatomy and anthropology at Heidelberg University, is in Queensland, with a view to making researches into the origin of man. The professor is of opinion that this state offers a splendid field for research, as the aborigines, particularly of Northern Queensland, are regarde as the last remaining specimens of primeval man. After studying the skulls and skeletons of all races of mankind for ro years, and the skulls of the Tasmanian types of Australian aborigines in the museums of Europe for the last three years in particular, Professor Klantsch concludes tha. the race from which mankind sprang has been Qoyukaped from a tune of which one sees the primitive condition at prevent in Queensland Analogous with this is the fact
