OPENING UP NEW GUINEA.

ANOTHER TRIDE OF LAKE DWELLERS,

Interest in the future of British New Guinea has been stimulated in Australia by the rapid progress of the Yodda goldfields in that ter ritory, which is being aided by the construction of a fine road from the coast to the fields, and by the discovery by Mr. C. Robinson, the Act ...$29,587.25ing Administrator, of another curious tribe of 158.41 lake dwellers. Mr. Robinson's story of his discovery of the lake dwellers makes romantic reading. He found them in December last, when on an expedition up the Op River-a stream which led to the Kolend Lake. His informant' was one Rise, the chief of the Siagard tribe, which lives on a hill overlooking the lake. In his report Mr. Robinson says:- One afternoon Rine procured canoes and accompanied us in a circuit of the lake, which 1 estimated to be about two and a half miles long by two miles broad, and deep withal, The margin is of the character of pest, quaking ominously under one's weight. SUSPICIOUS DEATH AT BANGKOK.

A Royal Decree on Quarantine has been issued by which Koh Phai is once more declared the quarantine station, at which all vessels from China poris must call for medical inspection. Vessels from Hongkong or Swatow must have been nine full days out from port before they receive pratique. The new Decree takes effect from 10-morrow.

That it was time to transfer the quarantine officer from Paknain to Koh Phai is shown by the fact that it has already beer found neces sary to send one vessel back to that island for quarantine purposes. The Madeleine Rickmers

arrived at Faknam on 19th ult. from Swatow with some 630 coolies on haard, When Dr. Rodriges, the quarantine officer, went on board, it was reported to him that one of the coolies had died a very short

time before As the symptoms seemed

suspicious the quarantine officer telegraphed for Dr. Highet, the Medical Officer of Health, who en examining the body, which had turned black, considered the case sufficient- ly suspicious to direct the steamer to return to Koh Phai with all on board. Dr. Rodriges left with the steamer for that station the next moring. The body was taken out to sea and buried.—Bangkok Times
