A NEW CODE"
We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as- those at prespot in use at Shanghai, and will. be hoisted of the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:--

The above signals will, as heretofore, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such posi tions or are moving in such directions that in- formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leay ing the harbour.

LOCAL STORM WARNINGS.
The Coinny itself is wamed of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gale of wind is expected to blow here.
