It is reported from America that, an attempt will be made, to ship the mess beef recently taken from the steamer China, and intended for the use of the Russian army in the Far East. About two months ago 4,000 barrels of mess beef, which had been placed aboard the Chin for shipment were removed and placed in a 'Frisco warehouse. Recently, however, the Russians have become pressed for supplies and an attempt will be made to land the beef within reach of the Rus sin troops. The Gaelic carried 1,505 barrels of beef consigned to parties at Shanghai. The remainder of the beef will be shipped via Van- couver, almost half of it having already been forwarded to that port on the Umatilla From Vancouver the beef will go under the British flag. There is considerable probability that the beef will be seized by the Japanese on its arrival at Yokobama, but the shippers prefer taking the risk to allowing the beef, which is much needed, to remain at San Francisco..
THE MACAO EXTRADITION

(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Macno, 28th May. There is much ingenuity in the attempt to minize the importance of my report in the sug gestion of a contemplated Chinese bombard ment of Macao. The statement made by the Portuguese Consul-General at your port, so far from belittling the value of my account of the feeling of unrest that prevailed in official quarters here during the week, leaves wholly. untouched the general accuracy of my ap preciation of current events in this city.
A perusal of my first communication to you will convince the most casual reader that no idea of any "bombardment was ever intended to be conveyed in the statement that a naval

Besides, these benefactors sent round is and cake in the moming, and Jack's gratitude i outspoken for the rough and ready hospitality that has been offered him. He would have preferred, however, if the focal press had not described the affair as a
