By this time the Twelfth Division had crossed the river by the boat-bridge higher up to Suikochin, and on the 30th preparations for a general attack on the Russian main posi- tion were commenced. Meanwhile one regi- ment of the Imperial Guard with heavy guns was stationed on the large i land opposite Chulien-cheng, at Ginteito, and still further south, the left wing, or Second Division, was dis- posed, with quick-firing guns. On the opposite i bank of the riverthe Russians had ranged their heavy artillery in front of Chulien-Cheng, the strength of which had been previously ascer tained by the Japanese. On the moning of the gath, at about 10 o'clock, just as a thick mist had cleared away, artillery firing was com menced on both sides, and continued for two hours until the Russian guas were silenced, Throughout that day large numbers of engineers were engaged in throwing bridges across the river, and by night-time a general advance was made all along the line, Chulian-cheng being the objective.
