In the shut-in Chinese quarters prevailing in San Francisco and elsewhere, there must be a good many offences committed amongst the enormous Chinese population which never come to light, and the existence of organisa tions which have to hide from the light of day, would naturally tend to encourage such.

It would seem that these Societies have existed for the past five or ten years, and many of their members are old Chinese residents here, though naturally they do not number any prominent citizens amongst them, unless the prominence te in a criminal direction. The names of a number of the men have been already published and the rest will probably follow in due course. They are mainly Kwang si Kehs, and Taichew men. It may interest those of a tender disposition, who have been fed on the horrors of the "Chest of Opium" and other weird China "Coasters," to learn that a humanitarian British Government does not go
