A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the inast beside the time-ball a Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:-

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and drum below in- dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the Colony.

A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and drum below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the Colony.

A cone point downwards indicates a-typhoon

to the South of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the South-West of the Colony.

A ball icdicates a typhoon to the West of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and ball below indicates

a typhoon to the North-West of the Colony.

Red Siguats indicate that the centre is believed to be more than 300 miles away from

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Harbour Office and on H M's Receiving Ship.

LOCAL STORM-WARNINOS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Guo placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gals of wind is expected to blow here.
